“Marcus only married her out of self-interest, but that woman? She married for love.” Tyrone almost laughed at the irony.
A hopeless romantic and a selfish man—what kind of marriage could come from that besides utter madness?
“Marcus was a playboy, always knew how to charm women and make them fall for him. But she grew up pampered in a wealthy family, spoiled to the core, unable to put up with the slightest neglect. Before the wedding, under his father’s orders, Marcus could drop tens of millions to buy her family heirlooms as gifts—he put her up on a pedestal, made her feel untouchable…”
But after the wedding, Marcus changed—or rather, he stopped pretending.
He was lazy, irresponsible, and utterly mediocre. Even when he joined the family business, he only showed up to pass the time, contributing nothing of value.
The Lynch Corporation survived on his father’s back alone.
“Then your grandfather fell gravely ill. A trusted business partner betrayed the company and left a massive hole in the finances. That idiot Marcus got duped into signing an agreement that sent the Lynch Corporation straight into ruin—plummeting to rock bottom, losing hundreds of millions.”
Tyrone’s voice was low, heavy.
“Realizing the mess he’d made, Marcus didn’t reflect on his mistakes. Instead, he ran from them. His father cut him off, forced him to face his debts alone. But Marcus, being who he was—spineless—came up with a plan. He’d use his wife and her family. He sweet-talked her, swindled her out of every cent she had, and soon became addicted to gambling. He convinced himself he could win back hundreds of millions with a single lucky bet. He even ignored her pleas and pawned her family’s heirlooms—everything her parents left her—just to pay off his debts.”
When she finally saw Marcus for who he was and threatened divorce, he refused. When she asked for her money back, Marcus had nothing left to give.
“Once his father found out, he lost it. Marcus was thrown out of the family.”
“Marcus owed huge gambling debts. The kind of people who loaned him money? They don’t forgive. They caught him and forced him to beg both his father and his wife for cash. His wife had nothing left. So, they pushed Marcus to trick her into coming out—after all, Marcus’s wife was once the most beautiful woman in Harboridge City.”
