Chapter 331 Maybe They’re Gearing Up For Conflict
Maren had never come across the name of that town before; it clearly wasn’t close to Voutsas.
Stormclaw accessed a digital map. “This is a small town near Grisriver, isolated, barren. Hardly anyone lives there, so unless we search thoroughly, finding any clues would be difficult.”
“Maybe they’re gearing up for conflict?” Maren asked, unease tightening in her chest.
Grisriver was a border city in Slatinia. Given that weapons were being sent there, it was evident that something major was underway.
If only a small cache were involved, it would have easily slipped into Voutsas. The fact that they hadn’t done so indicated a massive shipment, too extensive to smuggle discreetly.
With such an arsenal in motion, it was natural for Maren to fear the outbreak of war.
“That’s precisely my concern. I dug into the Williams family’s recent activities and found they hold considerable influence,” Stormclaw admitted after a pause.
“How influential?” Maren’s curiosity deepened.
“Details are scarce, but I investigated two neighboring states: Criala and Fleotho. In Fleotho, the governor and mayors all carry the surname Williams. Rival families, such as the Wrights, are subordinate to them. Furthermore, in Criala, four mayors have also been replaced by individuals with the surname Williams.”
As Stormclaw spoke, he passed a stack of documents for Maren to examine.
“That extensive?” Maren didn’t even glance at the papers; his words were convincing enough.
After all, the Marshall family’s authority was confined to Voutsas, while the Williams family commanded an entire state and parts of another.
“Could it be they’re chasing global supremacy?” Maren wondered aloud, realizing why they dared challenge the Marshalls.
“The odd thing is–Fleotho’s army hasn’t stepped in,” Stormclaw added with a grave expression. “I suspect the Williams family has ties with military brass, possibly securing their weaponry that way.”
“Did you confirm if any military leaders share the surname Williams?” Maren inquired.
“No concrete evidence; just a theory,” Stormclaw answered casually.
“Relax. The military answers to national leadership, not private factions. Unless the Williams family impacts regional stability like the Marshalls did, the army would have no reason to intervene. If anything, the military likely appreciates Fleotho’s current governance and could even support them,” Maren said calmly. “But what

concerns me is whether the Voutsas military might collaborate with the Williams family.”
“What makes you say that?” Stormclaw was visibly confused.
“The military has long resented the Marshalls‘ dominance, hence why they backed Higgs‘ rise. But Higgs has links to the Williams family,” Maren pointed out.
“That makes sense!” Stormclaw exclaimed. “If Higgs falters, the Williams family might take direct action, and the military could side with them, right?”
Maren said nothing, sipping her coffee in silence.
Considering how matters currently stood, the Voutsas military clearly harbored discontent toward the Marshall family’s overwhelming control. At the same time, the Williams family happened to be expanding its reach, skillfully managing multiple cities. Maren speculated this was why the military had chosen to align with the Williams family to assist Higgs in toppling the Marshall family.
Still, there remained a slim chance that the Voutsas military had no formal ties with the Williams family, and Higgs was merely taking advantage of both sides‘ power plays.
Yet, from Maren’s perspective, this seemed highly improbable.
After all, if the Williams family was openly targeting Voutsas, the military would certainly have known, yet they had intentionally failed to alert the Marshall family.
After all, although the Voutsas military resented the Marshall family’s dominance, their alliance had always
been strong. Otherwise, the Marshalls would not have held partial control over the military’s strength.
However, when the Marshall family faced a formidable opponent like the Williams family, the Voutsas military offered no warning. It strongly suggested collusion between the military and the Williams family.
“Resolve one issue, and another bigger mess appears. There’s no such thing as calm,” Maren sighed, feeling
worn down.
While the Marshall family remained a formidable force within Voutsas, they clearly lacked the capacity to fend
off the Williams family.
Maren sensed that earlier, the military had backed Higgs to sidestep a direct confrontation with the Marshalls. But now that Higgs had lost his usefulness, they might be forced to intervene themselves.
Should the Voutsas military combine forces with the Williams family to pressure the Marshalls, the latter would either have to surrender or face destruction. In that case, Maren’s painstaking work to cooperate with the Marshall family would simply hand the victory to the Williams family–an outcome she absolutely refused to
accept.
“Stormclaw, since you mentioned Shueso Town has few inhabitants, how exactly did you come across their weapons movement?” Maren suddenly questioned.
Stormclaw answered, “It wasn’t a direct find. Locals mentioned an influx of unfamiliar faces, so I dispatched
scouts.”
“That information came so easily?” Maren was nearly incredulous.
She reasoned that if these newcomers were truly conducting covert operations, their movements wouldn’t have been spotted so casually–unless they had deliberately made themselves visible.
