Penny gaped open-mouthed at Nathan. “How do you know so much about Corey, anyway?”
Nathan chuckled. “Corey underestimated me. He thinks all my power lies in the North, but he doesn't know that I have plenty of powerful connections in Brimmopolis, too.”
The director of the secret service, Hailey, was one of his best friends. She could answer any of his questions regarding the citizens of Brimmopolis at a moment's notice.
Penny suddenly thought of something.
Frowning, she said, “So you already knew about Corey's plan all along!
“No wonder you insisted on dragging me to the drinking party even though you knew I hated that sort of place! So you already knew that
Corey was going to get Barbara to seduce you, and you wanted to use me as an excuse to get out of it!”
It was precisely Nathan's decision to bring Penny along that had foiled Corey's plans tonight.
He had hoped that Nathan and Ceaser would get into a fight over Barbara.
Nathan grinned at Penny. “You're my wife, and I brought you along to help destroy Corey's insidious plans against me! How could you accuse me of using you as an excuse?”
Penny hit him hard on his shoulder. Simmering with rage, she snapped, “In the future, tell me clearly about your plans beforehand! I don't like it when you hide something from me, no matter how unimportant it is!”
Nathan took her hand. Trying to pacify her, he said, “I didn't plan on pulling the wool over your eyes. Otherwise, why would I be telling you about this now?
“Besides, I promise to tell you about my plans in the future, alright?”
Penny said guiltily, “I'm sorry. I was just a little startled by what you just told me. How could people be so manipulative and cunning?”
“I'm afraid we might become like that in the future. That's why I hope you won't keep this sort of thing from me...”
Nathan smiled gently at her. “Honey, don't you trust me?”
“Of course I do!” Penny replied incredulously.
Nathan continued smiling at her. “That's good enough for me. You have to believe that your husband will never hurt you and will always protect you, alright?”
Penny flushed scarlet. Feeling both happy and embarrassed, she muttered, “Ugh, how cheesy!”
The moment they returned to the hotel, Nathan received a call from somebody.
When he saw the number flashing on his screen, Nathan smiled sinisterly.
“Who's calling you at this hour?” Penny asked curiously.
Nathan grinned. “Mr. Lucas!”
