“Let's not harry, Chief Military Governor. Think it over when you get back. Let me know if you change your mind,” Clifford said.
“If you've nothing else for me, I shall be taking my leave,” Nathan replied.
The change in Clifford's mood was apparent. “Kindly see the Chief Military Governor out, Valois.”
“Understood! After you, Governor.”
Without adding further, Nathan strode out with Sage and troops from the Felidae in tow.
Clifford left the hall and returned to the study room without another word.
The servant then brought him some tea shortly
after.
Valois approached after he sent off the Chief Military Governor.
He closed the door behind him before he called out cautiously, “Clifford!”
“Has the Chief Military Governor left?”
“Yes,” said Valois. “This young Chief Military Governor's a smug one. He's not even tempted by our invitation to join forces and share power.”
“Being as accomplished as he is at this tender age, it's perfectly understandable,” Clifford replied.
“He'll soon find this a bitter pill to swallow. I'll be looking to have the Cabinet gut his military budget. He and his men should look forward to a difficult year ahead!”
That drew a snicker from Valois. “Yes, yes. He needs to be taught a lesson or else he wouldn't take us seriously.”
Clifford appeared concerned. “It doesn't bode well for us that the Chief Military Governor seemed to harbor some sort of bias and is unwilling to align with us. From the looks of it, it would seem that he is also close to our sworn enemy. Nathan getting a second leash of life through the Chief Military Governor's support would be an absolute disaster for us.”
Valois said in gritted his teeth, “We can't allow that.”
Clifford nodded. “The longer this drags on, the more complications there will be down the road. It's high time we settled the score. Isn't Nathan presently in Brimmopolis? Send someone to keep an eye on him and find out how close he is to the Chief Military Governor. It'll make it easier for us to figure out how to get rid of him.”
“Got it, Clifford.”
After he left the Davier family residence, Nathan and his entourage arrived at the Headquarters of the Chief Military Governor.
