Salute To The General (Nathan Cross) novel Chapter 2090

It was nine in the evening. Kylie and Ava were having dinner with Queenie at a fast food outlet.

Queenie looked distracted. She hardly seemed to pay attention to her chicken wings and ice cream. Looking up at Kylie, she asked softly, “Aunt Kylie, is my mama all right?”

“Didn't you say that my papa and mama will come and get me? Why aren't they here yet?”

“Don't worry, Queenie.” Kylie smiled reassuringly. “Your dad called this afternoon. He said he had rescued your mom, and he just called to say that they will come right now and get you.”

“Eat while you can, they'll be here any minute.”

Queenie nodded but didn't touch her food.

Instead, she stared out of the window

impatiently.

Someone took advantage of the fire at summer camp and kidnapped mama in the confusion.

She cried looking for her.

It was such a relief for Queenie when Kylie and Ava told her that her mother was safe.

Queenie wasn't reassured, however. She needed to see her mother with her own eyes.

The entrance of the restaurant swung open, and a crowd of people filed in.

Queenie looked up hopefully, thinking that her parents and maybe Uncle Colin had arrived at last.

She looked away in disappointment after seeing that it was just a bunch of men she'd never seen

before.

Their leader appears to be a tall and thin man with an awfully pale face. His most striking feature was his dead-set eyes, which resembled a fish. It was scary to look upon.

Queenie met his gaze and turned away quickly in fright.

The man with the dead-set eyes smiled when he saw the effect he produced. Leading his men, he walked over to Queenie's table.

With her military upbringing, Ava knew from a glance that these people were trained professionals. They reeked of murderous intent, almost as if they have just come from a murder spree and hadn't stopped to wash. The pestilence amidst them was difficult to ignore.
