Salute To The General (Nathan Cross) novel Chapter 2259

Morning came, and a new day began.

Over at the South Army's base, the cooks were unusually busy in the kitchen.

The commander had just given orders that they were expecting a special guest today.

The kitchen was abuzz since the morning. Everyone set to work, making the best dishes they could from the simple ingredients they had available. They wondered who was coming over—so much so that the commander wanted an exhaustive meal served.

Zach was known to be forbidding and strict. He was thrifty with military expenditure and would not usually ask for anything exuberant.

Meanwhile, Zach was reading his daily military updates at his office.

Marcelo, the captain of the National Guard, came in while he was still catching up with the updates. “Commander,” he interrupted politely, “all preparation is underway.”

Zach nodded. “Good. General Cross is coming today, so make sure nothing goes amiss. I want to make sure he has a good experience here.”

The commander did not say exactly why he went out of his way for Nathan. The truth was, although all high-ranking military officers already knew that Nathan was the Chief Military Governor, it was still confidential information to people outside of the circle.

On usual occasions, Zach would just refer to Nathan as the general since they still wanted to keep this a secret from other people.

One of the concerns was that foreign powers might target the Chief Military Governor's family if they knew about his true identity.

Marcelo, who was unaware of Zach's meditation, looked at him uncomfortably.

Zach caught the uneasy look on his face from the corner of his eyes. He flipped a page casually, asking, “What is it you want to say?”

“Commander,” the man said timidly, thinking if he should go ahead, “the matter between Bowen and the general is delicate. Bowen is Penny's biological father, so if they resume their familial ties one day, Bowen will be the general's father-in-law. This is a family matter. What if something goes wrong in the future? You'll end up offending both sides. So why get involved?”

Zach chuckled. “You know what? General Cross saved me once. We're like brothers, so I can't just let this slide without doing anything. Since Bowen messed with him and even came here for help, I should just do my part. Of course, it would be best if things worked out between them, but if not, I would still have a clear conscience knowing I did my part.”

“It makes sense now that you put it that way,” Marcelo said in agreement.

Just as the two were speaking, a Rolls-

Royce pulled up at the military base.
