Salute To The General (Nathan Cross) novel Chapter 2698

I'm done for...

I'm doomed...

There was nothing but despair in Nelson's eyes.

As Nathan stared at Nelson, he asked, “What else do you have to say?”

Nelson stuttered, “P-President Cross, I know I've done wrong. But please, give me a chance. I'm willing to leave Eurasia and never return. Please spare my life!”

The crowd shifted their attention to

Nathan.

Then, they heard Nathan say, “You've chosen a path of no return; you've chosen death, so how am I supposed to let you live after you've made your choice? If someone who has turned against their country can be forgiven, then no crimes will warrant the death penalty.”

The death penalty!

A shudder wracked through Nelson's body. Even though he was no longer a young man, he was still afraid of death.

At that instance, he was like a drowning man who was desperate to cling to anything that would save his life.

When Nelson realized that his pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears, he turned to the others around him. However, it was impossible for Zion and the rest to beg for mercy on his behalf.

Right then, Nelson spotted someone familiar in an obscure corner.

It was Hansel, who had come in quietly and had been staying in a nonconspicuous spot the entire time while watching the inspection with the others.

When Nelson noticed Hansel, he rushed over and begged in a trembling voice, “Mr. Windsor, my old friend, please help me out! Nathan is your protege, and you're his mentor. As long as you put in a good word for me, he'll surely let me live. Please, for the sake of our dozens of years of friendship, help me out!”

Hansel could not help but feel wistful at the sight of his old rival's desperate pleas for mercy.

However, he did not let his emotions take over his senses.
