As it turned out, Shadow Widow still wielded a certain extent of power and influence in the area.
That evening, Nathan and the others were dining at a restaurant when she slowly sashayed in. “I have some news, Mr. Cross. Several vampire patrol teams have come out from Kushburn and are searching for humans. The largest team has over three hundred vampire warriors, and its leader is a vampire viscount named Adolphus. There are many of you, so if you want to blend into the vampire patrol teams, his is probably your best bet.”
Smiling, he replied, “Thank you.”
“Why, there's no need for thanks between friends, Mr. Cross,” she replied sweetly.
Everyone else turned to Nathan with strange looks, wondering whether something had happened between him and the seductive Shadow Widow. Otherwise, why would she speak to him in such a suggestive tone?
Nathan was also feeling somewhat at a loss. Nonetheless, he knew that was just part of her behavior, so he pretended to be unperturbed.
Noticing the look of helplessness on his face, she hid her smirk behind her hand and took her leave. “Please continue with your meal, Mr. Cross. I'll send someone to continue tracking the whereabouts of Adolphus' patrol team and report back to you later.”
He nodded. “Okay.”
They finished eating an hour later. By then, it was past seven o'clock in the evening and probably already pitch dark outside.
Just then, Shadow Widow appeared again and gave Nathan an update on the vampire patrol team's latest movements.
After listening to her report, he said to Wolfric and the rest, “Everyone, it's time for us to set off.”
They had just raided a small underground shelter for human survivors. While destroying the place, they had captured the five hundred-odd men and women inside. Then, they had herded them into filthy, blood-stained prisoner transport trucks, locked them up, and were now escorting the vehicles back to Kushburn.
Hiding atop a cliff, Nathan and the others surveyed the vampire convoy traveling slowly along the road dozens of meters below them.
For the first time, Wolfric took the initiative to seek Nathan's opinion. “You're our commander-in-chief and the leader for this operation. What's your decision on what we should do now?”
“We jump straight down and sneak into the trucks transporting the prisoners without alerting the vampires. We need to infiltrate into Kushburn under cover of their convoy,” came his response. After saying that, he looked around at them. “If anyone has objections to my plan or thinks they can't sneak into the enemy's vehicles without making a sound, say something now. Otherwise, I'll take it as you all agree with me and assume you have the ability to do it.”
Almost everyone present did not say anything, silently agreeing. Only Peder uttered scornfully, “It's just sneaking into the enemy's convoy. What's so difficult about that? Quit underestimating others and get the show on the road. Otherwise, the convoy will pass us by.”
