I looked at Gina in surprise.
"Me?!" I shrieked
Jackson laughed loudly. Even my parents joined in.
“Gina, darling,” he said, “pick a better opponent. Elise here couldn’t handle a feather, let alone a real fight.”
"You're right" my mom said "Don't waste your time on her, my dear"
My parents exchanged glances and chuckled. They had always considered me too wild, too untamed. The thought that I might actually be able to hold my own in a fight was something they clearly couldn’t entertain.
“Do not judge a book by its cover,” Ferris said, commanding everyone's attention. Everywhere became silent as he spoke.
"Elise is strong" Ferris said "How can you not see that?"
"Surely, you must be mistaken, your grace" my father said "Elise wouldn't last a minute in a fight with anyone. She's our daughter. We're sure of this".
"You might be surprised"
Ferris' encouragement warmed my heart. He was the only person who stood up for me.
I tried to refuse Gina’s challenge. I didn't want things to end up badly for both of us. This couldn't go well, no matter what the outcome was.
“Gina, this isn’t necessary. We don’t need to resort to violence,” I said, hoping to avoid the confrontation. “Let’s just—”
Gina’s eyes narrowed “Oh, so now you’re trying to back out? What’s the matter, Elise? Afraid you might actually have to defend yourself?”
She turned to Jackson “I guess Elise thinks she’s too good to fight me. Or maybe she just doesn’t have the guts.”
Jackson turned to face me with an annoyed expression
“What’s this nonsense?” he barked at me “How dare you refuse your Luna? "
"But -" I started.
"Elise, you’ve been called out. Obey your Luna and do as you're told.”
I took a deep breath, knowing I had little choice now. My options were limited, and I couldn’t afford to refuse Gina.
I nodded slowly" Alright. I'll fight"
Gina smiled "Perfect. Let's go"
Gine and I stepped down and walked down the field. The crowd parted for us, creating a ring in the center of it all. Gina and I stepped down to the middle. The place went silent.
I looked at Gina. She had a smile plastered on her face, like she was sure she was going to win.
The thing is - Nobody knows that I was rescued by an old woman when I was taken by Scar. This woman and her son took me in, cared for me and taught me so many things.
