Belinda said, “I’m not hungry. I don’t feel like eating. Don’t mind me and go on. I’m heading home soon. You shouldn’t drink on an empty stomach while socializing for work tonight.”
Since Caroline had gradually gotten the hang of handling the company, Belinda rarely attended business engagements unless they were important. Other than that, she left everything to Caroline.
“Are you still mad at Dad, Mom?”
Caroline poured her some tea and gave it to her while asking with a concerned voice.
“I heard from Emma that Dad isn’t eating anything either. However, I think it’s not because he doesn’t want to eat. He’s probably in too much pain to do so. Celine is worried about him. She brings food to him every meal. I wonder why she isn’t as concerned about you when you love her so much.”
Caroline took the opportunity to badmouth Celine. “Do you think Celine hates you, Mom? She’s used to being spoiled, yet you were suddenly so stern with her and even punished her. She might be criticizing you behind your back.”
Belinda sneered. “I have nothing to fear because I can easily crush her if I want to.”
She looked toward Caroline, “Don’t you want to use this chance to kick Celine out of the family?”
Caroline smiled. “You love her. What use is there in me chasing her out? You’ll bring her back anyway. Not only that, it’ll ruin the relationship that we have painstakingly built. Our mother-daughter bond is still too weak. I won’t risk it.
“That’s unless she broke your heart. I wish you could be the one to make her leave. That’ll devastate her. She won’t give up if I do it. She’ll think that all of you will defend and help her.
“Of course, I won’t let her live comfortably. Didn’t she tattle on me? I admit that I was targeting her and decreasing her income. I disabled the auto-transfer of her monthly allowance from the company funds and suspended her card.
“I know she still has savings from the Fisher family’s money. I’ll take the money back bit by bit.”
Belinda asked, “Aren’t you worried I’ll help her after revealing your plans to me?”
“Let’s go eat, Mom. Dad cheated on you and betrayed you. Regardless of how you treated him all along, he could’ve filed for a divorce if he couldn’t stand any of it and let this marriage end peacefully. He shouldn’t have had an affair behind your back. He’s in the wrong, and it’s not worth letting yourself go hungry or lose sleep over his actions.
“I’m not scared of you getting angry, Mom. I’m telling you that Dad will still do this once you’re away from home. His love for you died long ago. Maybe he didn’t even love you from the start and was only after your status. Being your spouse could benefit him and the Clark family greatly.”
Belinda looked offended. She eyed Caroline icily and said, “If you weren’t my biological daughter, I would’ve cut your tongue off after what you’ve said. I don’t need anyone meddling in my matters.”
“If you weren’t my mom, I wouldn’t have said anything. I don’t like asking for trouble.”
Belinda was rendered speechless.
Caroline was truly her daughter.
