“Uncle Dylan!” Sonny greeted cheerfully. He rarely saw Dylan and was not close to him, so he just greeted him verbally. He did not run over to ask for a hug like he would with Callum and the others.
Dylan spread his arms toward Sonny with a smile. “C’mere, Sonny. Let me give you a hug.”
Sonny looked at Serenity for approval and only walked over to Dylan once she nodded. Dylan picked him up. “Hi, Uncle Dylan.”
“I haven’t seen you in ages. You’ve gotten a little heavier than before. You need to eat more to grow bigger quickly.”
Sonny replied, “You just said I got a little heavier. That’s because I ate lots and grew bigger!”
Dylan laughed. “That’s right. Did you miss me?”
“No, I don’t see you very often so I’m not that close to you, so I haven’t missed you.”
Dylan said to Serenity, “Sonny really is honest. He doesn’t even know how to lie.”
“It’s good for little kids to be honest.”
Sonny also said, “My teacher says we should be honest kids that don’t lie.”
“Right, right. Looks like I’ll have to see you more often so you can get to know me. Then, you’ll miss me.” Dylan looked over to Zachary who was still busy and decided not to disturb him. He came here to curry favor with Zachary and see if he could get any information on why Serenity had invited him for dinner.
Since Serenity was here, he might as well ask her directly.
Dylan walked over to the sofa with Sonny in his arms and asked Serenity, “Liberty’s not back?”
“She’s very busy right now and will only be back for Christmas. Duncan took Sonny to spend the last weekend with her.”
Dylan nodded and asked carefully with a sheepish smile, “Am I the only one who was invited? Did I do something wrong?”
That should not be the case. The York elders were still hale and hearty. Even if he had done something wrong, it would be up to them or Zachary to educate and discipline him.
There was a saying that your eldest sister-in-law was like another parent, but in reality, Serenity usually left them alone.
Serenity met Dylan’s gaze straightforwardly and smiled. “Why? What about me inviting you for a meal makes you so scared?”
“Scared? I’m not scared, Serenity. It’s just really sudden, so I was worried I might have done something to upset you.”
“You have done something bad,” Serenity said with a pretend sternness.
