Chapter 300: His Last Wish

Angela POV

The house was quiet when Sean and I returned home. Victoria met at the door, her expression concerned but composed. She’d been watching the children while we dealt with everything at the hospital.

They’re in the living room, she whispered. They’ve been asking about Christopher all day.

My heart sank. How do you explain death to children who’ve already experienced too much loss in their young lives? When we stepped into the living room, Aria ran to us immediately, her small arms wrapping around my waist.

Mommy! Is Uncle Christopher better now?Her innocent eyes looked up at me, full of hope.

I knelt down to her level, struggling to find the right words. Sean crouched beside me, his hand steady on my shoulder.

ChristopherI began, but my voice caught.

Sean stepped in. He’s gone on a trip, sweetheart. Somewhere very far away.

Ethan stood a few feet back, watching us with those observant eyes that always seemed to see too much.

He died, didn’t he?Ethan asked quietly.

The directness of his question stunned us both. Sean and I exchanged glances, wondering how our fiveyearold son understood what we were trying to shield him from.

Yes, Ethan,I finally admitted, nodding slowly. He did.

Aria’s face scrunched up in confusion. What’s diedmean?

It means he can’t come back to see us,Ethan explained to his sister, his voice matteroffact though his eyes glistened with

unshed tears.

But his spirit can,I added quickly, seeing Aria’s lips begin to tremble. His soulthe part of him that loved usthat will always

be around.

Will he bring me presents from his trip?Aria asked hopefully.

I couldn’t help but smile through my tears. No, sweetie. But he’d want us to remember all the presents he already gave us.

After we put the children to bed, Victoria approached me with a large, flat package wrapped in simple brown paper.

This was delivered the morning of your wedding, she explained. From Christopher. With everything that happenedI forgot until

now.

Alone in our bedroom, I carefully unwrapped the package. Inside was a painting that took my breath away. The scene was from high schoolme in my oversized uniform, standing in the library. I looked so young, so determined.

I remembered that day. I hadn’t thought about it in years, but seeing it captured on canvas brought everything rushing back. The way Christopher had watched from behind a bookshelf, the quiet thank you he’d offered afterward.

My tears fell freely now. All those moments I’d taken for granted suddenly became preciousChristopher and Sean playing hockey together in college, Christopher carrying me home after I’d gotten drunk when Sean started dating Christina, the awe in his eyes when he held Aria and Ethan for the first time in the delivery room.

Chapter 300: His Last Wish

I never imagined his life would end at thirtythree. Everything bad happened so suddenly.

The funeral was set for a week later, to be held in London. It was Christopher’s mother’s hometown, and he would be buried next to his mother’s grave. The day before the funeral, Sean and I were packing our luggage, preparing for tomorrow’s flight. That’s when David arrived.

The day before Christopher’s funeral, David came to our home. He looked exhausted.

I found these at the villa in Italy,he said, handing me three gift boxes. They were under the Christmas tree. I believe Christopher intended them as Christmas gifts for you and the children.

I clutched the packages to my chest, overwhelmed by this final gesture. The servant brought tea for David, who gently suggested, You can open them later.
