Chapter 223
“Dr. Quinn, can I get discharged? I’m totally fine now!” Millie grabbed Lainey’s sleeve and begged pitifully to be discharged when Lainey dropped by to visit.
Lainey flipped through Millie’s checkup record and said lazily, “It wasn’t me. It was Dr. Lloyd who wouldn’t release you. I don’t have a say.”
“Ugh!” Millie slumped onto the bed and pouted at Lainey. “I want to get back to work. I’m very passionate about my job. Dr. Quinn, do you get me?”
Lainey grinned at her. How would Millie love her job when she had to work overtime and get criticized whenever she accompanied Lainey to surgery?
Lainey patted her on the head. “Fine. I’ll talk to Dr. Lloyd.”
Millie immediately transformed into an obedient child. She asked, “Can I visit Cara?”
Lainey nodded. “Of course.”
Millie quickly changed into her shoes and followed Lainey to Cara’s room. As Cara remained in critical condition, she was warded in the ICU.
Warren might have stabbed Cara in the abdomen, which wasn’t supposed to be fatal, but the knife plunged deep into her body. Worse, he even pulled the knife out afterward.
Staring at the feeble Cara in bed, Millie was transported to the moment Cara shielded her from Warren’s attack. How could a vulnerable woman like Cara exhibit such courage in moments of danger?
That reminded Millie of herself, who had followed the kidnappers for Winston’s sake, even though she
was afraid of pain.
She had grown up sheltered and pampered, but she didn’t make a sound even when the kidnappers stabbed her in the back and threw her into the ocean. All she could think about was Winston, and she prayed that he stayed alive.
Millie saw herself in Cara. Having suffered a failed marriage, she didn’t want Cara to sustain any losses again. She had to make sure that Cara recovered fully.
Therefore, she offered, “Dr. Quinn, I’ll foot Cara’s medical bill.”
Nodding, Lainey said, “Got it. We will perform the cardiac surgery on her when her condition has stabilized.”
Millie’s ringing phone interrupted the conversation. She answered the call. Someone began, “Hi, Ms. Caldwell. This is the Yerwick City Police Department.”
Her eyes lit up. After a lengthy conversation, she hung up.
Puzzled, Lainey asked, “What happened?”
“The police said that Kane Olsen might be sentenced for assault.” Millie cast a look at Lainey with mixed feelings.
“Great. He deserves that. Once he is behind bars, no one will be interfering with Cara’s treatment anymore. Lainey’s serious face softened into a smile. “Looks like the Grim Reaper isn’t after him yet. Oh, well. This

is fate!”

The two doctors stared at Cara, who was lying in the bed. Lainey’s statement about fate echoed in Millie’s ears, reminding her of her multiple attempts to divorce Winston.
Each attempt was more distressing than before, as though some higher power was interfering in their marriage. Was it fate that prevented them from getting a divorce?
At that moment, Cara moved her finger. Lainey gasped in joy, “She’s awake!”
