After thanking Vanessa, Winston hung up. The second the elevator doors opened, he strode out, with Eli following right behind.
“Mr. Greer, I’ll accompany you.”
Winston glanced at Eli, his voice tinged with reproach. “Why wasn’t my phone with you?”
“Mr. Greer, your phone died, so I… Ell looked apologetic.
Winston didn’t respond. Instead, he quickly got into the car and drove away.
Eli stood rooted to the spot, letting out a deep sigh. He hoped Millie was okay. However, Winston’s reaction when he learned that she was in danger seemed to suggest that he still cared about her.
Upon entering the police station, Winston saw Julia sitting on a bench in the lobby, her eyes brimming with tears.
Julia seemed somewhat surprised when she caught sight of Winston.
He approached Julia but was momentarily at a loss for words. After a brief silence, he greeted in a low voice, “Mrs. Caldwell.”
Then, he asked, “Are they handling Millie’s case?”
Despite her dislike for Winston, Julia knew this wasn’t the time to be confrontational. So, she nodded. She then pointed to a nearby conference room and said, “They’re inside.”
Winston nodded lightly. He intended to pat Julia’s shoulder in comfort, but due to his status, he retracted his hand. After that, he quickly made his way to the conference room.
Julia stared at his retreating figure, feeling a mix of emotions she couldn’t quite put into words. After all, she had watched Winston grow up, as Layla and Selma had been close friends for many years.
Winston was undeniably outstanding, both in terms of his appearance and his family background. The only issue was that he didn’t like Millie. 2
Julia would have been more than happy if someone as remarkable as he were to become the Caldwells son–in–law. Unfortunately, in matters of the heart, he had become a figure of contempt.
Julia lowered her head. As a mother, no matter how perfect Winston was, she didn’t want Millie to face
danger again.
As soon as Winston entered the conference room, everyone rose except for Terrence. The others nodded respectfully and greeted, “Mr. Greer.”
Winston acknowledged them with a nod. He then turned to look at Terrence, who maintained a cold demeanor and showed no friendliness to Winston.
“Mr. Caldwell,” Winston greeted.
Yet, Terrence simply turned away.
“Mr. Greer, are you here because of Ms. Caldwell’s case?” the police commissioner asked.
Winston nodded. “What’s the current status? I just found out about this.”
The
police commissioner then recounted the situation. “We found that Ms. Caldwell was abducted at a residential area entrance earlier tonight. After reviewing the surveillance footage, we saw that she vanished at this Intersection.”
Winston looked at the direction highlighted on the large screen.
The police commissioner added, “We have dispatched teams to search in all four directions.”
“How long have the police been out?” Winston asked.
The police commissioner replied, “An hour.”
“And there is no news at all?” Winston frowned, his tone heavy with concern.
