“I will send you away.” Beverly quickly got up to follow me, while I remained seated in the chair with anger and humiliation boiling inside me. As a woman with a lady’s education, I had the ability to bottle up my emotions. There was no need to do this during my marriage to Carson, so it got a little rusty, but I still retained the ability to do it.
Meanwhile, Sharon gave me my juice, to which I responded with a smile. “Thanks.”
The whole time I was drinking my juice, Sharon was watching me. In fact, she had been doing this since dinner the night before.
“Where are you from, Miss Hawkins?” Sharon finally asked. She must have been extremely curious about me.
“I’m from Riverdale.”

“And even? What part of Riverdale did you live in?” Although I wasn’t the least bit interested in where she was coming from, talking to her proved to be an effective way of diverting my attention from my anger.

Beverly returned while we were talking, after which she sat down with a smile on her face. “Miss Hawkins, it is a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise,” I replied politely.
“Eric tells me it’s his first time in Germany, so why don’t I show you Hamburg?” She was courteous to me.
“Thank you, Ms. Deering, but I don’t feel like going anywhere.”
“Isn’t it boring to stay at home? You must take my advice to leave. The combat knives, lighters and men’s clothing sold here are some of the best. The same goes for the exquisite craftsmanship, so you might want to bring some of them back to your friends and relatives as souvenirs.”
Hearing her mention combat knives, which I remembered being one of Dylan’s favorite items, I agreed with Beverly’s suggestion.
