Lucas’ father had passed away for more than ten years. Thus, the news that his mother had found a replacement caused Lucas’ head to spin, as the fact was too shocking for him to accept. 

“Mom, have you gone senile? Why are you looking for a companion at this age?” Lucas asked candidly. 

His words upset Carmen, who then gave his arm forceful pinch. “I’m a woman too. You’re allowed to philander all you want, but am I not permitted to find someone to live out my days with?” 

A frown descended on Lucas’ face as he rubbed the painful spot on his arm. It was then that he remembered the burning question in his mind. “Didn’t you mention that Mr. Ward was at home? But there’s nothing in the house. Literally nothing at all. What in the world happened?” 

Carmen froze before she murmured, “That’s impossible! When Mr. Ward asked me to go shopping on his behalf, he was still in my room. How can he not be home?”
