Chapter 944 Making Up Stories
Kate’s cheery smile did not waver. It looked like a jeer, and it made Maggie feel awful.
Taking a deep breath, Maggie drew herself to full height. She was born into a powerful family in Lumenopolis. Her status was uncommon. She had only set it down when she was.
with Alex.
What right does an adulteress have to be looking at me like that? She must be here to rub it in. Let’s see what this woman has up her sleeve today.
Their eyes met. Neither bothered to conceal their hostility. Time seemed to have stood still until Emmalyn began fidgeting listlessly in Kate’s arms.
Kate patted Emmalyn to console her and heaved a sigh of relief when the child finally stopped crying. Then, she turned to Maggie and smiled. “Is this how a powerful family like yours treats your guests? I’ve been standing here with a child in my arms, and you won’t invite me in.”
Maggie did not respond. Instead, she threw open the door and stood aside.
The women entered the living room. As if she was in her own home, Kate sat down on couch and placed Emmalyn beside her.
Being over six months old, Emmalyn had learned to sit up without help. Cuddling a doll i her arms, she looked sweet and meek.
Maggie felt conflicting feelings rising in her heart. If the doll-like little girl was not Alex’s child with another woman, she might be fond of her. That moment, however, felt strange and uncomfortable.
Shifting her gaze away from Emmalyn, Maggie reiterated her question, “What can I do for you?”
Kate did not answer immediately. Instead, she poured herself a cup of coffee and took a sip before drawling, “Nothing much. I just wanted to chat with you about Alex.”
As soon as she heard those words, Maggie knew that Kate had come to provoke her.
Before she could respond, however, Kate set down the baby blanket she was holding. The phony smile was still on her lips.
