The man cocked his head and glanced at her. Janet did not hold herself back and complained, “This marriage proposal isn’t romantic at all. There’s no wedding either, so I won’t recognize it. Don’t fantasize about it.”
Liam responded with a nonchalant shrug. “It’s fine, as long as the law recognizes it.”
Janet was at a loss for words.
Soon, the car arrived at the airport.
Janet hesitated when she saw the plane tickets Liam had prepared for her.
She thought of her father’s reaction when he got home and learned about what happened. In the end, she still boarded the plane with Liam.
She knew that there was no point of return after making certain decisions.
Although she said that she refused to recognize the marriage, deep down, she agreed with it.
She agreed with the marriage certificate’s authenticity and her willingness in signing it. She also agreed with the voice in the depths of her heart.
It was already 4:00 pm by the time they arrived in the capital.
Janet did not receive any phone calls on the plane as she had turned off her phone.
However, her phone began to ring non-stop once she got off the plane.
The calls were from both Ethan and Ulric.
She hesitated, then accepted the call from her brother instead of her father.
As soon as she accepted it, Ulric’s exasperated voice could be heard.
“Janet! Are you insane? You know Dad doesn’t approve of your relationship with that man and yet, you brought him back home?! Where are you now? Come home at once!”
Janet sat in the car with her head lowered. She fiddled with a hole on her ripped jeans emotionlessly.
“We’re married.”
“What married? Don’t bullsh*t me… What did you just say? You two are…”
A sudden realization befell Ulric. The other end fell silent for a while. Janet was certain that Ulric was so angry that he did not know what to say. Thus, she spoke, “Brother, I’m really frustrated and confused now. I don’t want to argue with Dad for now. Please console him for me. After some time, once he has calmed down and processed this piece of news, I’ll bring Liam back and have a face-to-face discussion with him.”
Ulric chuckled sarcastically. “So, you’re all grown up now, eh? Console him for you? Why should I do that? Have you ever thought of your elder brother before making drastic decisions? I helped steal the contract for you and you turn around and marry that Jackman fella. How am I supposed to answer Dad? Do you want to get me in hot soup?!”
“I’m sorry, Brother.”
“Don’t call me brother! You can give up your family for a man. I don’t have a sister like you!”
Janet felt trapped. She knew Ulric made these remarks out of anger, but she still failed to hold back her urge to cry.
At once, she lifted her head and turned to look out of the window. She opened her eyes wide to stop her tears from flowing out.
“You’ll always be my elder brother. You might refuse to recognize me as your sister, but I’ll still rely on you to take care of the family affairs. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of myself. Once Dad is no longer angry, I shall return. That’s all for now. I’m hanging up, take care of yourself too.”
She quickly ended the call after saying her piece as if she would break down if she said another word.
Along the way, Liam sat beside her and observed her coolly without saying a word.
The atmosphere in the car was eerily silent.
The silence was broken when they had reached the entrance to the villa.
“Young Master, we’re here.”
Liam nodded, opened the car door, and got out.
Janet dashed out as well.
When she was home, she headed for the bedroom. Liam followed suit after unloading the luggage from the car.
They were the only ones at home. Therefore, Janet left the door unlocked, so Liam managed to enter the room, too. He saw her sitting by the window with tear marks on her face.
A hint of sorrow flashed across his eyes.
Yet, he did not comfort her. He was aware that, at times, comforting someone was of no use.
Ethan did not like him and Liam did not like the Hancock family either. This mutual dislike was not something that could be compromised.
She must make a choice.
