This partner could be the descendent of an official of a certain country or a relative of a world conglomerate.
In short, they were all wealthy and respectable people.
In order to ensure that no accidents would happen to the two in the marriage, a kind of Gu poison would be planted in their bodies after they were born and once their partners were decided on.
This poison had been passed down in the Shelby family since the imperial ages.
The Gu poison was separated into a mother and child so that they would share life and death, but one would be planted in the woman’s body, and the other would be planted in the man’s.
When they get married and consummate their marriage, the poison would cancel each other out in their bodies.
On the other hand, if the two people did not end up together, the poison would spread in the body until finally, they would die a painful death.
The Shelby family were descendants of the royal family. Perhaps to ensure the family’s eternal prosperity, or perhaps because of other reasons, they formulated such an inhumane rule and plan, turning all the children of the family from generation to generation into a pawn used for marriage.
After hearing this, Nell felt chills down her spine.
Her blood ran cold.
If she had not heard it with her own ears, she would not have believed that there was such a ridiculous thing in this world!
How sick did a person have to be to come up with such an inhuman idea?
Joseph smiled gently. “When your grandfather heard this, he forbid your mother from being with him. Unfortunately, the two’s feelings remained and they did not care about that at all. After your mother found out that he didn’t mean to deceive her, she didn’t leave him, and instead, she planned to elope with him.
“Your grandfather found someone to bring her back, but unfortunately, she became depressed ever since. Those two were like madmen, deciding to take the deadly path even though there was an easy way out. No one could do anything about them.”
Nell’s heart was shaken.
She had never expected the truth of the matter to be like this.
She asked softly, “What happened afterward?”
“Afterward?” Joseph frowned and said, “Nothing happened afterward. They never saw each other again. One day a month later, the people we sent out sent word that Jasper Shelby was dead because he had volunteered to enlist in a war in South Africa.
“Since he could not be with your mother and did not want to accept his family’s arrangement to marry that woman, he chose death and ran off to the battlefield alone. It didn’t take long for news that he had died there to reach us.
“When your mother heard the news, she immediately fell ill. I once found sleeping pills in her room and knew that she wanted to commit suicide. But later, the doctor checked and found out that she was pregnant, she became strong enough to live for the sake of her child.”
At this point, he looked at Nell with emotion and whispered, “Nelly, your mother’s biggest regret in her life was losing you. Unfortunately, she was unable to get you back during her lifetime, but now that you know who you really are, if you can, go to her grave when you have the time and light up a few sticks of incense for her. I believe her spirit in heaven will feel comforted.”
Nell clenched her fists tightly but she managed to pull a smile.
“Alright, I’ll do that.”
With that out of the way, there was nothing more to say next.
Nell then got up to take her to leave and Joseph sent her out of the cafe before they parted and went their separate ways.
Nancy was the one who drove her here today, and the car was parked in the parking lot not far away.
Nell thought about today’s events as she walked to the parking lot.
Halfway there, she suddenly heard a familiar voice.
Pausing, she looked up to see a man wearing a bucket hat pulling at a familiar figure not far away.
Nancy muttered, “Miss Katz?”
