“They’d most likely suggest that you leave it in the hands of the public security authorities for a fair investigation but your hands aren’t entirely clean. Even if you were set up, I’m sure your family must have engaged in a lot of under-the-table activities.
“If you were to hand it over to the public security authorities, those dealings on the sly will come to light and it will just be one blow after the other. The Wilburns will be done for.
“So you dare not take a chance on Mom’s side of the family, yet you cannot decide if we’d help you or not. Hence, you turned your attention to Gideon.
“Everyone knows that my relationship with Gideon is solid. Should something happen between you two, even if it was to shut you up, he’d help you take care of it.
“You might even be able to gain leverage to demand more. Gideon would never spare any mercy towards your family who is his mother’s relatives, despite how angry he is.
“You basically have a license to kill in your hands and you plan to threaten us with it. We’d be caught in a fix and used by the Wilburns to fall back to. Am I right?”
With that, the living room fell silent.
It was pin-drop silence.
Deathly pale, Helen gawked at Nell in horror, unable to utter a word.
Within reach, Gideon’s face turned grimace and ashen.
No one would have thought that a simple matter would unveil a rather sinister and despicable truth.
Out of a sudden, a crashing sound was heard.
The teacups were swept off the table which gave everyone quite a fright.
Gideon stood up in fury. His sharp eyes darted a chilling glint, seemingly capable of freezing its target.
“Aunt Joyce, send her back to the Wilburns! Tell them that the Leiths will never help the Wilburns in anything ever again!”
Aunt Joyce came forth and answered with respect, “Yes.”
Raising a brow, Nell said nothing.
Helen’s complexion saw a change of color. Pale in the face, she pranced and grabbed Gideon by the sleeve.
“Cousin, you can’t do that. We’re family. If anything were to happen to us, my dearly-departed Aunt would lose face. You can’t just abandon us!”
Gideon’s eyes were cold. The next second, Aunt Joyce went up and forcefully pried Helen’s hand away.
“Take responsibility for your own actions. This rule will not change even for immediate relatives, let alone distant family!”
Giving her the cold shoulder, he strode off and left.
Helen placed her hope on Nell.
With tears streaming down her cheeks, she pleaded, “Sister-in-law, I beg you. Take pity on us and lend a hand! I really don’t want to marry that old man. My whole life will be ruined if I were to marry him.”
Nell faintly replied, “I might have a say if something happened in the family but this involves the customs...”
She curled her lips a little. “Your cousin won’t even help, what’s the point of begging me?”
“Sister-in-law, Cousin loves you the most. He will definitely listen to you. Please help me to talk some senses into him. I’m sure you can.”
“Oh? Really?”
Raising a brow, she smirked coldly. “Who was the one earlier who said my lowly status makes me unworthy of Gideon? She also said that I was less than her in status? I would be too embarrassed to implore if that’s the case. After all, I can’t even save myself, having come from such a background, much less others?”
As color washed off her face, Helen begged again, “It was a slip of the tongue. Sister-in-law, I was full of sh*t and nonsense. Cousin loves you so much, he’ll listen to you if it comes from you.
“Sister-in-law, please help me out, as a woman to another woman! I really don’t want to marry that old man. I will forever be grateful to you and be in your debt!”
Nell frowned but in the end, she never gave her word.
“Rather than come to me, why don’t you come clean with the old madam? She’s been good to your family. She won’t just sit by and watch especially with the matter involving your marriage.”
