Gideon broke the situation down to Old Madam Quinton through the phone, saying that although they would not bail the Wilburn family out, they still needed to get to the bottom of the matter.
After all, Gideon’s mother was an immediate family member of the Wilburns. She might have passed on but it does not change the relationship. Should the situation be blown out of proportion, the effects would follow.
After hanging up, his gaze flew back to Nell’s face.
Leaning in to peck her in the lips, he muttered, “I need to head out in the afternoon. Take a rest at home and call me if you need anything, okay?”
Nell nodded.
She paused before expressing her concern. “Be careful.”
Gideon let out a smile and without a word, he turned and left.
It was close to the evening when Nell received a call.
The call disclosed what had happened to the Wilburns — the stuff in the goods was not their doing but planted by a competitor in the market.
Nevertheless, the investigation also made other discoveries, such as evidence of Helen’s father profiteering over the years.
The old madam had not gone soft on dealing with this matter.
Truth be told, Helen’s family was only a distant relative of Mother Leith, unlike Simon who was of direct descent.
Her father was a cousin of Mother Leith. Hence, the old madam, both overtly and covertly, had their backs over the years, as long as it was not a conflict to the question of principle.
To her dismay, they had turned their backs and schemed against the Leith family.
As it turned out, save a thief from the gallows and he’d first cut your throat.
The matter was soon resolved with the Leiths having a hand in it.
Due to the old madam’s intervention, Helen did not marry that fifty-year-old man in the end, and she could continue her studies in the capital.
However, following the decline of Wilburns’ collateral descendants, Helen would not be able to live an aristocratic life like before.
Because of the seduction incident, Old Madam Quinton found her tactless and an embarrassment to the Wilburn family. The old lady snubbed her, refusing to give her the time of day.
All the more was Helen’s life in turmoil.
Nonetheless, this was none of anyone’s concern as it was all her own doing. The supposed turmoil was only the lack of ability to be extravagant and have access to high-end venues like before.
Compared to ordinary students, she was still living the life.
These issues were finally put to rest a month later.
Gideon’s injury had almost healed completely while Nell’s fetus was starting to show. On the advice of the doctor, Nell was to refrain from bustling about and had to stay put at home for the sake of the baby.
The affair regarding Old K had not come to an end but she had a baby on the way. Now that she was back, it was impossible for her to make a trip to Country F for this purpose.
Her body might not be able to handle the trip back and forth, and not to mention, the Leiths would not be at ease to let her go.
Thus, she left the matter in Gideon’s hands to arrange an investigation in Country F.
Fortunately, Gale also had the intention to get behind the truth with this related to the Shelby family. At least, it put the odds in their favor.
Time passed in a blink of an eye and soon it was the Lunar New Year.
Nell had promised Lizzy that she would accompany her to release some floating lanterns in the river. Having been made aware that the spring festival’s floating lantern event was held in the suburbs, the whole family had their reunion dinner and drove to the location.
It was a rare occasion that the old madam and old master wanted to join in the fun, so they went along as well.
With the family of five only taking one car, Gideon took the wheel while Nell sat in the passenger’s seat. Together with Lizzy, the old madam and old master took the back seat.
The car drove on a busy street. As it was during the New Year’s, the shops along the street were bustling with a mixture of music and voices of discounts and promotions. On top of that, there were also colorful lights entwined on the trees by the road. It was a lively sight with the display of fireworks and the sea of lanterns.
The car made its way there slowly and it was not long before they reached the bank of the river.
The river, merged from three streams, traversed along the city center, adding a charm of landscape to the city.
