Looking at the lights in a distance, Nell’s thoughts were slightly jumbled.
Noticing that something was off, Gideon asked, “What’s wrong? What are you thinking about?”
Nell collected her thoughts, then shook her head and smiled.
“Nothing, I was just thinking about how Gale Shelby has sought me out multiple times, just to make me accept my identity as a descendant of the Shelby family, but I’ve refused repeatedly.
“Today, he even brought out that piece of jade and spoke about my father’s bequest, yet I still rejected him. That is because I do not want to be related to the Shelby family. Am I being too heartless?”
Gideon regarded her with a strange look.
Nell laughed. “Do you think it’s weird that I’m thinking like this?”
Gideon did not try to hide it as he nodded honestly.
“You were very disdainful towards them before, so this is… quite surprising.”
Nell sighed lightly.
She stretched out her hand and stroked her abdomen gently. A soft smile played across her lips.
“I’m surprised at myself too. When this thought emerged in my head, I was wondering if I have been possessed by a saint. Why would I change my mind so drastically?
“As a father, he caused the death of my biological mother. As a husband, he failed to protect his wife. As a man, he did not fulfill his responsibilities.
“I did blame him before this, and I did not want to admit that my biological father was such a man.
“But now that I have a child of my own, some of my views have shifted.
“I don’t want to be bogged down by things in the past, about who was wrong and who was right. All of that feels burdensome and unimportant now.
“They are already dead. No matter how others think of them, they will never know. The only ones who are suffering are the ones who are alive, so what’s the point in that?”
The night breeze blew at her hair, lifting the stray strands around her face. Her petite face looked a little lost and weary amidst the moonlight glow.
Gideon felt his heart clench and a dull pain filled his heart.
He reached out to grab her hand, pulling her into his chest.
Nell had to stop and look up at him.
Gideon was looking at her with an intense expression. His gaze was filled with concern.
“If I knew that this issue was going to cause you so much distress, I would have protected you and prevented them from finding you forever.”
Nell broke into a chuckle. “What is this?”
He maintained a steadfast expression. “Although you may sound resolute, I can see that your heart is still wavering. You have, at some point, considered going back to the Shelby family?”
Nell pressed her lips tightly and fell silent.
After a while, she nodded gently.
“Gideon, do you know what it feels like to be lonely?”
Gideon felt a pang in his heart as if he was gripped by a giant hand.
He nodded. “I know.”
“It feels like you’re a floating duckweed, with no origin and nowhere to go to. I used to think that Shaun Jennings was my father, and mum was my mother. Although I hated Shaun Jennings, my thought process was simple.
“Later, I learned that both of them were not my real parents. Even though my mother treats me well and I love her, human beings are just funny that way.
“You cannot help but wonder, how are your biological parents like? What are their personalities? What do they look like? What have they been through?
“Who are the rest of your relatives? What do they do? Are they well? Do they know you exist?
“Isn’t this kind of thinking naïve? Even then, for some unknown reason, I have those thoughts in my head. It seems like there are so many things tangled together in a faraway mist. If I don’t take the initiative to go nearer, then those things will forever remain blurry to me.
