Nell went downstairs to explain to Aunt Joyce.
As it turned out, Aunt Joyce did not believe a word she said.
In fact, Aunt Joyce threw her a suggestive look. “I understand. Missus, there’s no need to be shy about it. It’s okay. It’s a great thing for couples to share a good relationship. Soon, a little young master will be on the way; all the more hustle and bustle in Leith Garden.”
In short, she rambled on but refused to believe Nell about it being a misunderstanding.
Nell gave up with her explanation unable to get through to Aunt Joyce.
She and Gideon were husband and wife in the eyes of the law anyway, so it was nothing out of the ordinary for them to be engaging in a little intimacy. It was quite awkward to be caught red-handed by elders but it was not a huge deal.
Forgoing the chance to restore her uppity image in Aunt Joyce’s mind, Nell turned to pour herself a glass of milk and headed upstairs.
She heard chatter coming from inside the study as she walked past.
By the sound of it, Gideon was talking on the phone.
Not minding the slightest, she was ready to go about her way when suddenly, she heard a gentle soothing.
“Oh baby, be good. Listen to me, take your medicine and have an early rest, okay?”
Her body stiffened.
She froze on the spot.
“I’ll be back soon.”
“Be a good girl and I spend time with you when I’m back, alright?”
“Yes, Lizzy is of course the most adorable darling in the world.”
The voice continued on in the study.
The conversation mostly involved gentle hushes of the man, a tone she had never heard before. It was with such tenderness.
She could even imagine the man bearing a smile on his lips and adopting an affectionate look on his face.
It was a sight of warmth but she felt as though a splash of water hit her, sending chills to her spine.
Nell even heard Gideon chuckling in utmost delight.
“Okay, I’ll miss you too. Good night.”
The call ended.
It was quiet inside for a while but quickly, the sound of footsteps walking out ensued.
Nell was blue in the face.
Out of impulse, the strange coincidence had her turn tail and run.
She sprinted all the way to her bedroom and slammed the door behind her in a wham.
Coming out of the study, Gideon witnessed a whirlwind coming through from afar and the next thing he knew, the bedroom door was shut.
He was dumbstruck but a sudden thought furrowed a frown between his brows.
Coincidently, Aunt Joyce came upstairs and was passing through. He stood by the corridor and asked, “What’s wrong with the Missus?”
Aunt Joyce paused, perplexed for a moment.
“The Missus just came upstairs, right? She was alright then!”
The frown on Gideon’s face deepened.
Without another word, he turned and headed toward the bedroom.
In a dimmed light, Nell leaned against the headboard in the bedroom, flipping through an entertainment magazine.
Gideon trod over and queried casually, “Were you in the study?”
Peering at him through the corner of her eye, Nell let out a cough. “Yes, I passed through. What are you nervous about?”
Gideon did not reply.
Even without looking at him, she could feel that sharp gaze hounding her with a hint of inquiry.
In a bid to discontinue the conversation, Nell intentionally yawned and put down the magazine.
“It’s getting late. I’ll hit the sack now.”
With that, she turned to her side and lied down with her back facing him. Nell pulled the covers over her and shut her eyes.
Gideon’s eyes darkened as she snuggled under the covers.
