Lucy Katz was slightly stunned. When she came to her senses, she nodded. “Sure.”
“If I had met you earlier than him, would you have liked me instead?”
Lucy stopped dead in her tracks.
She had never thought of this possibility of being with Simon Wilburn.
She felt that there were not many ‘what ifs’ in the world to begin with.
Fate brought us together; fate brought us apart. Many times, we thought that we were working hard toward getting married.
What we did not realize was that the stroke of serendipity had been set by the heavens from a long time ago.
We would never know how long we would be together for certain.
Why would we talk about the ‘what ifs’?
She contemplated for a while. Simon did not rush her. He quietly accompanied her, waiting for her answer.
After quite some time, Lucy gently answered, “We met when we were three years old.”
Simon was stunned.
He looked at Lucy. Her gleaming eyes revealed her remembering a past.
Her lips curved up slightly, looking through the endless mist surrounding them. “At that time, my father was an officer serving under his uncle. He often followed Uncle Foster for duties. My mum was afraid that I would be bored being alone at home with no one to play with. She would bring me to the old Foster home to play.”
“That was where I met him.”
Her memories opened a big hole, trapping the time that was sucking in the wind as she traveled twenty years back, to a gentle warm afternoon.
She smiled tenderly. “I was very young at that time. I couldn’t even walk steadily yet. I was playing in their courtyard trying to catch dragonflies. While I was attempting to catch them, I tripped over a stone.”
“It would be alright if I had just tripped over a stone but there was a lake of lotus flowers in front of me. I could not stand firm and fell into the lake.”
“The lake was pretty deep. I still remember how I was drowning with the water rushing into my ears and throat.
“I desperately kicked, and shouted, and screamed, and struggled. The adults had gone to the front, and the servant accompanying me had to leave for a moment.
“No one was there to save me. When I was just about to give up on hope, someone had suddenly held onto my hand.”
“He then put his arm around me and used all his strength to swim to shore.
“I was scared to death and was still in a daze. I could not remember who had saved me. When I had come to my consciousness, I couldn’t stop crying.
“When the people in the house heard that I had fallen into the water, they all anxiously came out to look for me. People were surrounding me, blaming all sorts of reasons.
“They did not know that I had fallen into the lake myself. I did not want to blame anyone. I was just feeling very scared and needed a hug.
“That was when I saw him. He was as drenched as me, standing not far ahead. He took out a sweet and said, ‘Don’t cry, this is for you.
