Beatrice leaned closer and whispered in her husband's ear.
Immediately, Clarence shot up from the couch and roared, “No. This is too risky. Lives are at stake here! If we're discovered in the end, we might end up in jail!”
Beatrice looked up and reminded him, “This is the price we have to pay if we want to be successful. Artemis might end up marrying someone else if we drag this out. Ronni will get kicked out, and everything will be too late.”
Clarence quivered at the sound of the outcome.
He had always wanted to get on the Luther family's good side. Seven years ago, his daughter bore Artemis a child, and that was when Clarence thought she would have the opportunity to marry into the family.
Alas, Artemis was unmoved despite Rhonda's beauty and all she did, and their wedding ended up being stalled for a good seven years.
With Artemis turning thirty, it was about time he settled down.
Everyone in Hallsbay will take me as a joke if the person Artemis marries is not Ronni.
When Beatrice noticed her husband wavering, she continued, “Our reputation is not even the main issue if Ronni gets chased out of the family. What's more unsettling is whether we will be able to continue staying in Hallsbay in the future. There will be public opinion directed at us.”
Clarence paced up and down around the coffee table about ten times until he finally announced, “All right. Go ahead with the plan, but make sure you don't go overboard. I don't want you to end up killing someone.”
“Don't worry. I'm always careful when it comes to Ronni's future.”
Over at the ward in the Luther family, Maxton was lying on the bed as he stared at the ceiling, smiling foolishly.
Beside him, Bailey observed him with her eyes narrowed.
I know he's mentally unstable, but isn't this a little too much?
The sight of Maxton's current state reminded her of Zayron's words the other day. The boy had told Bailey in all certainty that Jessica had dirt on Rhonda.
I wonder if Zayron knows something. Don't tell me Max is the one who told him.
An outrageous idea budded in Bailey's mind, and she smirked to herself.
Pulling Max up from the bed, she said, “Max, be a good boy and look into my eyes.”
The child smiled absentmindedly before looking at Bailey's eyes, and they maintained eye contact for three solid minutes.
Then, Bailey stared deep into his eyes and asked, “What is your name?”
Maxton's pupils constricted as he replied in a daze, “Maxton Luther.”
“How old are you?” Bailey continued.
“Seven.”
“Did you tell Zayron about Jessica knowing something Rhonda did?”
“Yes.”
“How did you know?”
“Rhonda said it herself.”
Ha! This kid has been growing some gut, hasn't he? How dare he trick me?
Bailey flicked her fingers beside Maxton's ear, and the boy instantly snapped out of his stupor.
He was quiet for a moment until he started smiling stupidly again.
Bailey knocked his head so hardly that the blow made him dizzy.
