For all these years, the Revelle family had been telling the public that Zephyr was Veronique's sister's child.
No one else but a few of Veronique's close friends knew about Zephyr's real identity.
“How did you know about Zephyr's identity?”
Right as Artemis parted his lips to reply, he saw Veronique walking out of the operating room. Instantly, he clamped his mouth shut and shot Bailey a look.
Bailey blinked in confusion, thinking, What the h*ll is this man trying to tell me this time?
“Stay with Ms. Revelle here. There are some things I need to deal with in the company, so I'll leave first.”
Hearing that, Bailey became even more confused.
She sensed that the man knew about something.
After watching him leave, Bailey turned to look at Veronique, confounded. With a frown, she asked, “How did Artemis learn about Zephyr's identity?”
Veronique slightly inclined her head and muttered, “Zayron sent Simon's blood sample to Zephyr. Artemis was secretly looking into it, and he ended up investigating Zephyr as well. Perhaps he figured it out when he thought about how Zephyr looks like me and about how I suddenly left Hallsbay for many years seven years ago.”
Bailey lifted her hand to massage the spot between her eyes. “Forget it. Let's not talk about him anymore. That man is powerful, and it's a piece of cake for him to look into anything. Let's talk about Zephyr's situation instead; what are you planning to do next?”
Veronique slumped on the couch and buried her face in her hands. She mumbled, “Bay, you saw his situation. In your professional opinion, how long do you think he'll be able to live?”
Bailey walked over to sit beside her and hugged her. “Zephyr's already in the late stage of his illness. You should know that patients like him can usually only live for about three months. However, if we go for the hormone treatment, I can ensure that he has eight more months to live.”
At that, she sighed. After steeling herself, she went on, “Vero, you have no time to hesitate anymore because god isn't giving us the chance to. Look for Zephyr's father. Maybe his father can save him. Even if we assume the worst—that his father's bone marrow isn't a match for him—you can bear another child and use the baby's cord blood to save him.”
“No. N-No. I can't look for him. I can't!” Veronique shook her head vigorously before muttering in a miserable tone. “Bay, you don't understand how complicated our issue is. He doesn't love me, and he even hates me. If he finds out that I've given birth to his son behind his back, he'll... he'll...”
At that point, she began bawling.
Bailey shook her head and sighed. She did not know what she could do to persuade Veronique at the sight of her misery.
A man would never understand another man's bitter feelings; only the ones in the situation would know the pain.
“Vero, I'm sorry, but there isn't any medicine meant for leukemia yet. Even surgery won't be able to treat an illness like this. There really isn't anything I can do about this.”
“I know,” Veronique choked out. “You've already tried your best. I'm weak for being too afraid to look for his father. I'm selfish for ignoring the boy's chance of living. Someone like me should go to hell.”
“Veronique, what nonsense are you talking about? Every life has its own fate, and this isn't your fault, so don't blame yourself for this.”
“Bay, give me a few more days. Since I've already brought Zephyr back to Hallsbay, I'll find his father. I just need a little more time to prepare myself mentally.”
“All right.” Bailey reached out to pat her back and smiled. “You have my support for any decision you make.”
After Artemis left the lab, he drove to where Justin was.
When Artemis entered the infirmary's study, Justin was in the middle of reading documents by the table.
Artemis did not know if he was too quiet or if Justin was too focused, but Justin did not realize it when he entered the room.
“What are you looking at?”
