Scarlett. I can't believe it's her. Her engagement with Justin has brought great pain to Veronique.
Seven years back, Scarlett, the heiress of the Fletcher family, became terminally ill. All her medical details, including her blood type and genetic information, were copied to many big research institutions because the family was looking for the best doctor to treat her.
In the end, Justin was the one who cured her.
After that, the woman fell in love with him, and they got engaged. To many, it was a prospective union between a political family and a prestigious family with exceptional medical talent. Still, to Veronique, it was a day of loneliness and hopelessness when she left the country with the baby she was carrying.
No one would believe that after so many years, fate would bring them together again. At the end of the day, none of them managed to escape the wheel of fate and fortune.
Bailey sat silently on the couch for a solid ten minutes until she snapped back to her senses when her phone rang.
“Bay, did you get it?”
Bailey forced a rigid smile. “Yeah. I just got it. I was about to send it to you,” she replied dryly.
She logged into her account and emailed Scarlett's details to Veronique.
Silence set in until the ambiance turned suffocating, and no one spoke for a long time.
Bailey was beginning to feel numb when Veronique finally uttered, “So, it's her. I guess there's no running away. I have to face her in the end. Thanks, Bay. I'll deal with the rest on my own. There's no helping me beyond this.”
Bailey paused for a bit and replied, “I deliberately left some traces in the database so that they know the data was leaked. Even if the Fletcher family knows Scarlett's information was hacked, they'll not blame the research center, so you can go ahead and do whatever you want with peace of mind.”
Veronique was brought to tears. “I know you could well wipe off any traces,” she choked out, “but you chose to do so because of me, right, Bay? I can't thank you enough for what you did for me...”
“Cut it out, Vero. Please don't make me cringe. I got to go. I'll hang up first, okay? Let me know if you need anything else. You helped me a lot when we were studying medicine. It's only reasonable that I return the favor. Of course, that's unless you don't take me as a friend.”
After ending the call, Bailey logged out immediately and deleted all the history on her laptop.
Just as she walked out, Bailey saw Artemis leaning against the door, and she jumped.
“What are you doing here?” she asked with a frown. “I mean, since when were you here?”
Don't tell me he's still hunting Spook down and got my location when I signed in just now. I hope that's not the case because I have nothing to pay him with now. Three billion is a lot of money! It's not even enough if I sell myself off.
Artemis straightened his back and pushed Bailey back into the study.
Bang! The door shut with a loud noise behind them.
Bailey glanced at him nervously.
He must have found out. Maybe he wasn't even drunk that day. He might have learned the truth when I told him that I was the one who took the money.
“H-Hey! Listen to me. I was the one who took the money, but I gave everything to your nephew, so you should look for Zayron instead. Don't blame it on me.”
A glint of glee shone in Artemis' eyes.
I don't mind spending three billion to raise my own son.
“He's still a minor, so it makes sense that I deal with his guardian, right?” he argued.
While speaking, he pulled her close with his arm and tugged Bailey into his embrace.
