Beatrice sighed to herself as she looked at her daughter, who was boiling with rage.
She knew her daughter would storm off to settle the scores with the woman if she divulged the identity of the woman whom she suspected.
They could not afford to make any mistakes at this critical point.
“The wedding is coming right up. You'd better focus on being a bride. I'm going to tell you when you feel better. Otherwise, you're going to regret your rash decision by then.”
Rhonda pursed her lips and gave Beatrice a disapproving look. “Mom, do you think I'm that impulsive? Forget it, then. I just want to be Artemis' bride right now. I'll deal with the rest when I'm Mrs. Luther.”
“That's my girl.” Beatrice reached out to caress her daughter's head, a cold glint in her eyes.
The eldest daughter of the Shurmer family, Zoey Shurmer... Hah. Sophia Carr had only died in the fire because she knew of the Shurmer family's darkest secret. I should investigate what happened back then. If I could get hold of more secrets of the Shurmer family, perhaps I could use it to protect Ronni from Zoey.
Meanwhile, in the study of Shelbert Condominium, Bailey was leaning against the bookshelf as she eyed Veronique, who was slumping against the couch.
There was an unfathomable look in Bailey's eyes.
“Vero, why don't you tell me what you're planning to do?”
Veronique lowered her head and kept quiet for some time before she parted her lips to say, “I'd like to ask Scarlett out and let her know the truth about Zephyr's identity. I did get pregnant with Zephyr before she knew Justin. She cannot possibly blame me for this.”
“And then? What do you plan to do next? Are you going to ask her to leave Justin so that he can take on his responsibility as Zephyr's father?”
Pursing her lips, Veronique did not reply.
Bailey shook her head and let out a sigh. “Vero, you're underestimating how tenacious a woman can be when she's in love, and I know for a fact that Scarlett is very much in love with Justin. Even if you did give birth to Justin's son, she will not just back out because of this. Don't ask me how I know about this. My intuition as a woman is telling me that this is the way things are going to play out.”
Veronique looked at her and let out a chuckle. “Actually, that's not what I plan to do at all. In fact, I plan to propose a deal to Scarlett. If she agrees to donate the bone marrow, I will take Zephyr far, far away, and never return to bother Justin. If she refused to take up the offer, I will be left with no choice but to tell Justin of Zephyr's identity. Maybe as his father, Justin's bone marrow might be a good match. Even if his bone marrow doesn't match Zephyr's, there is a good chance that anyone in the Xuereb family's bone marrow will match Zephyr's.”
Hearing that, Bailey furrowed her brows.
“This is quite risky, Vero. I'm worried that Scarlett might think of getting rid of Zephyr. After all, there is a possibility that Justin might leave her because of Zephyr. A smart woman in her position would choose to nib the problem in its bud.”
When Veronique heard that, her face paled.
Truthfully, the possibility did cross her mind. However, she was reluctant to face the truth.
“W-What should I do, then?”
Bailey thought for a moment before replying, “Give your sister a call. Ask her to come back for a while. To everyone else, she is Zephyr's mother. She should be the one to try and talk to Scarlett about this so that she could try to sound out Scarlett's thoughts on this first.”
“But this is going to take a longer time. I'm afraid that Zephyr might not be able to wait until then,” Veronique mumbled hesitantly.
Making her way to Veronique's side, Bailey reached out to take the former's hand. “I've said it, and I'll say it again. Zephyr will be fine for the next seven months. I think my plan is much less risky than the one you suggested. Vero, the Fletcher family's influence knows no bounds. If you were to reveal Zephyr's true identity to Scarlett, it is no different than letting him meet his demise. Do you understand?”
Struggling to come to a decision, Veronique slumped on the couch. In the end, she relented as she responded, “All right. I'm going to call my sister and ask her to come to Hallsbay.”
