After ending the call, Artemis turned to look at the ocean as a wave of bitterness washed over his heart.
Is this how cruel fate is? Something just had to happen when I'm about to execute my plan. Is this fated? Are we destined to not be in each other's lives? Is that why God isn't even giving me a chance to keep her here?
“Thank goodness you haven't shot yourself,” came a youthful voice from behind Artemis.
It was Zayron.
The boy jumped over the railing and walked over to his father. After a moment of studying Artemis from head to toe, he frowned and continued, “Fortunately, you won't need to go on with your painful plan.”
Artemis lifted a brow before lowering his gaze to look at Zayron and asked, “What do you mean?”
Zayron clicked his tongue. “You have a good son who doesn't want you to be shot to death. That's why he let out a snake and let it bite him. I'll call Bailey now and tell her that Max has been bitten by a cobra and is on the verge of death.”
Artemis' expression darkened, and a hint of anger manifested in his eyes. “Are you telling me that he intentionally let the snake bite him? Damn it! How can he do something dangerous like this?”
Zayron flinched in fear.
Darn, Ratemis is quite scary when he's angry.
“A-Actually, he wasn't the one who let out the snake. It was Rhonda. Max came clean with Rhonda last night and even said that he was going to get a DNA test with her. Rhonda was desperate, so she ordered someone to put a snake in Max's room. The only thing Max is guilty of is playing the fool and letting the snake bite him.”
Artemis was speechless. His temples throbbed.
These two idiots! Don't they know how dangerous this is? If anything happens to the two of them, she'll never come back to me even if I get shot ten times, let alone once.
“I'll settle the scores with you later. Hurry and call your mother. Tell her...”
At that, Artemis paused for a moment. “Tell her that my enemy shot me. Tell her that the bullet is lodged in my heart but no one dares to operate on me. Urge her to hurry back.”
Zayron blinked rapidly. “Aren't we supposed to tell her that Max has been bitten by a cobra?”
“A cobra's bite is deadly, but that's something a doctor can deal with, although it'll take quite an effort. Do you think your mom's going to come back to develop the antidote for him?”
Um...
Zayron pursed his lips before muttering in a sympathetic tone, “So you mean to say that Dummy suffered for nothing?”
Artemis huffed. “Well, it isn't completely pointless. At least I don't need to be shot now.”
“What are you waiting for? Hurry and call your mother.”
