After sitting up in bed, she leaned back and asked, “How is Max doing? Does he have a fever after the venom was neutralized?”
Artemis handed a cup of warm water to her. “Drink some water to warm your stomach. I'll get someone to bring you some food in a while.”
As Bailey took the cup from his hand, she noticed a slight change in their relationship.
Both of them wanted to talk about the elephant in the room, but neither dared to start first.
“I...”
“I...”
“You go first.”
“No, you first.”
Cocking his brow, Artemis reached out his hand to caress her cheeks before breaking into a smile. “Fine, I'll go first. I acted rashly back then and got you pregnant without your knowledge. I apologize for that.”
Bailey rolled her eyes as she mumbled, “You don't sound sincere at all.”
Enamored by her reaction, Artemis couldn't resist sitting by her side and pulling her into his embrace.
“I still remember what you told me at Luther Group back then. You said that the man was a rabid dog and that you would castrate him if you saw him again. Now that he's right in front of you, do you still want to do it?”
Bailey shot him a glare.
He must be teasing me for not carrying out my threats. D*mn this b*stard!
With a gentle smile, Artemis nuzzled his head against her neck as he joked, “Just admit it if you can't bring yourself to do it. I promise I won't laugh at you. After all, we're both adults and will be sleeping frequently with each other. If I were to be castrated, it would be the bane of your sexual life.”
Bailey didn't know what to say.
What sort of nonsense is he spouting?
Thump! Thump!
Suddenly, a knock on the door was heard.
Artemis' face turned grim at having their banter interrupted.
“What is it?”
“Mr. Luther, Mr. Maxton is awake.”
Without a moment's delay, Bailey pushed Artemis aside and jumped out of bed.
When he saw her reaction, Artemis massaged his forehead.
Is her son all that matters to her?
When she noticed how annoyed he looked, Bailey couldn't help but smile. She subsequently walked over and planted a kiss on his lips before suggesting warmly, “Now that our child has returned from the brink of death, we, as his parents, should go see him at once. Since we have plenty of time for each other in the future, what are you so anxious about?”
I'm not the one that's anxious, something else is.
Inside the ward, the doctor was fixing up an IV drip for Maxton, who was grimacing throughout the entire process.
“B-Be gentle.”
This is scary!
Annoyed by how his brother was reacting, Zayron snatched the needle from the doctor's hand and—before Maxton could resist—stabbed the needle into the latter's vein.
“Aah!”
The agonized scream was so loud that it could be heard through the entire corridor.
When Bailey heard the faint cry of her son, her heart skipped a beat as she picked up her pace.
The moment she barged into the ward and noticed Maxton glaring at his brother with teary eyes, she twisted Zayron's ear before even saying a word.
“You naughty boy, why did you bully him again?”
Zayron rolled his eyes.
Who's the elder one, and who's the younger one? Who's bullying who now? Just as expected, Mommy doesn't love me anymore with him around. I should have killed him just now with the needle!
Goosebumps rose on Zayron's skin, and he slapped his father's hand away. “You're making me cringe, Ratemis.”
“Haha!”
Inside a private room in a café by the corner of the street, Wendy hissed at Rose, “Didn't I already tell you that we shouldn't meet for the time being while being the talk of the town? Why did you refuse to listen?”
Lowering her head slightly, Rose flashed a smirk.
This woman is such a hypocrite. Despite her repeated claims that we're best friends, they're nothing but a lie. She'll definitely throw me under the bus at the first sign of trouble. However, I don't care about all that anymore. Now that my reputation is in tatters, I just need to use her in my revenge against Victoria.
“Of course it's something urgent. You have seen for yourself the pictures exposed two days ago. Now that we have successfully made Victoria the talk of the town, she would drown in ridicule if we reveal to the public that she's Mr. Gezmond's mistress.”
Wendy was gripped by hesitancy.
Should I do this? The fame and reputation Lionel has painstakingly built will be destroyed if this scandal breaks. Do I really want to throw the currently peaceful life into chaos just because of Victoria?
“Don't act rashly. Let me think about it first.” Picking up her bag, Wendy then warned, “Next time, don't ever ask to meet unless it's something urgent. It's not like you're not aware of your current predicament.”
With that, she strode right out the door.
Watching her leaving silhouette, Rose couldn't help but sneer.
Hmph, you're so naive. Do you think I'll stay my hand just because you asked me to? No matter what, I'm going to expose Lionel's mistress and wreck chaos upon your marriage. Now that my reputation is ruined, what makes you think you can continue living the high life in a prominent family? If I'm being dragged through the mud, I'll make sure that you join me.
Inside the living room of the Jefferson residence, Beatrice was taking a call while leaning against the couch.
Upon being informed of something, she sprang to her feet with a drastic change in her expression.
“What are you trying to say? What do you mean by Ms. Rhonda has been exposed?”
“Mrs. Jefferson, all of Ms. Rhonda's misdeeds have been revealed, including stealing a child and lying about its identity to the Luther family. Furthermore, she even planted a venomous snake that bit Mr. Maxton. Hence, the Luther family wants her to be imprisoned for life.”
Beatrice's legs suddenly gave out as she fell back onto the couch.
It's over. Everything's over.
