On the second floor of a coffee shop, Zoey sat on a couch beside the window of a private room, staring coldly at the middle-aged man who sat across from her.
“Mr. Dahmer, you've been working in Caremark Hospital for about ten years. Does it upset you that you never get a promotion opportunity?”
Sweat beaded the middle-aged man's forehead when he heard that.
The Shurmer family had just sent him the blood sample for him to conduct a DNA test the day before.
Zoey came looking for him just the day after that.
He didn't need to guess to know her purpose in meeting him.
“Um, Ms. Shurmer, I believe that your family would still treat you as their own regardless of whether you're adopted or not. There's no need for you to take the risk by forcing me to tamper with the test result...” said the middle-aged man, Lawrance Dahmer, sheepishly
Before Lawrance could finish his sentence, Zoey interjected, “I heard that there's a vacancy in the Medical Association. You've been searching for an opportunity but to no avail. How about I lend you a hand instead?”
Lawrance's body shuddered ever so slightly. He stared blankly at her as the determination in his eyes began to waver.
How could I reject such a tempting offer from her?
Zoey noticed the flicker in his gaze and struck the iron while it was still hot. “You're a smart man, Mr. Dahmer. You've been working in the DNA lab for years, and you know a slight alteration to the test result could bring a huge difference to someone. Besides, you have to sacrifice something in exchange for a gain. I've made my offer to you. If you're dissatisfied with it, you can negotiate further with me. However, if you're reluctant to help me, then I'll have to find another person to do the job.”
After saying that, Zoey sat on the couch and waited for a while. When she noticed that Lawrance was still remaining silent, she no longer wanted to waste any more time on him. Thus, she got up and was about to leave.
“Hold on!” Lawrance stopped her and said through gritted teeth, “You're a straightforward person, Ms. Shurmer. It seems fated that you came to me first, so I'll carry out the task for you. However, I hope that you will keep your word after this. Otherwise, I can't guarantee you that the public won't find out about you bribing me for the fake report.”
Zoey smirked when she heard that. “Sure. I'll take that as a yes, then. I hope we'll have a fruitful collaboration.”
Lawrance hesitated for a bit before shaking her hand. Subsequently, he produced his phone from his briefcase and called a number.
“Is the result for the blood sample Mr. Shurmer sent yesterday out yet?”
“Yes. The result was released ten minutes ago. I just emailed you the result. Have you received it? I'll send it again if you haven't received it.”
“Let me check.”
He ended the call swiftly and took his laptop out of his briefcase.
After logging into his email, he glanced through the document. Shock surfaced in his eyes as he read the report.
“W-What's happening? The result shows that Ms. Jefferson is not biologically related to the Shurmer family.”
Stunned, Zoey snatched the laptop from him to take a look for herself.
What's going on? I don't understand. If Bailey is not the biological daughter of the Jefferson family, why does she look so much like Waverly? It only makes sense if she's related to the Shurmer family. Is there something wrong with the test result? How is she not related to Dad?
“Are you sure it's accurate? Is there a mistake?”
Lawrance flashed a smile at her. “Isn't this result what you want? You want me to tamper with the report so that you could twist the truth and stop her from reclaiming her identity, right? The report shows that they're not biologically related, which means she has no blood relations with the Shurmer family. You should be happy.”
