Chapter 679 Severed Tendons
Meanwhile, inside a bedroom at the Hoffman residence, Juliana stumbled to the bedside, reaching out to grasp Huntley's hand.
“Huntley, what's wrong? What happened to you? What did they do to you?” Beads of tears streamed down her cheeks as she spoke. This is all my fault. This young man, who had a promising future, was ultimately ruined by me.
Her heart clenched and throbbed painfully as she gazed at his ashen face and dry lips. A hint of hatred gleamed in her eyes.
After experiencing all sorts of hardships, she was no longer an innocent young girl who only knew how to rely on others to survive.
Cough! Cough!
A weak cough sounded. The next instant, Huntley gradually opened his heavy eyelids.
His gaze lingered on the ceiling for a few seconds before he slowly turned his head to look at Juliana.
Taking in her tear-stained face, he wanted to reach out and caress her cheeks. However, he couldn't lift his arm even after several attempts.
Only then did Juliana realize something was off. Her heart immediately sank.
His body was covered in injuries, including his wrists. She hadn't examined his condition earlier, but upon noticing his difficulty in initiating a movement now, Juliana lowered her head and stared intently at his arms. A few seconds later, her pupils abruptly constricted.
“H-Huntley, it can't be. They couldn't have treated you so cruelly, right?” Mr. Doyle promised me he would let you go. He told me he would never harm you. I don't believe they would do this. I can't believe they crippled you just like that!
She tried lifting his arm as she spoke, then gently released her grip.
Left without any support, his arm fell limply the next second, landing on the soft mattress.
Plop, plop, plop.
Tears flowed down her cheeks, showing no sign of stopping.
Juliana was reluctant to give up. She tried a few more times, but the same thing happened.
On her fifth attempt, a middle-aged woman rushed into the room and shoved Juliana away from the bedside.
That woman was Huntley's mother. She was one of the mistresses of the Cloudax family's patriarch and was usually hidden from the public eye.
Because of that, Huntley was abandoned by his family when he was little and eventually ended up on the training base.
“You b*tch! Don't you think you've caused enough harm to my son? You are the reason why he's covered in injuries now! Do you see this? His arms are crippled now because they severed his tendons! He can never lift his hands again. Even so, you're still unwilling to let him go, repeatedly moving his arms to aggravate his wounds. Are you that determined to turn him into a completely disabled person?”
Juliana staggered a few steps backward, slipped, and fell heavily on the floor.
Although she had suspected what had happened, she still couldn't bring herself to accept the reality after listening to Huntley's mother's words. How can I accept this? He was such a carefree and outstanding young man. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe him as a talented, handsome man. Yet now, because of me, he has become like this. Can a person with severed tendons still lift their arms? He can't even perform the most basic tasks to take care of himself now, much less raise his arms. It's a fate worse than death for a proud man like him to be in this wretched state suddenly. I was wrong. I mistrusted Mr. Doyle and brought this tragedy upon Huntley. If Bailey and Zeke had been there to keep things in check, perhaps he wouldn't have become like this now. I was so foolish and naive to believe that bunch of old men. The tendons in his arms were severed, so what about his legs?
She instinctively looked at the foot of the bed. Perhaps due to his countless wounds, covering him with a blanket would press against his injuries, and so his body was left uncovered.
When she saw his mangled ankles, her pupils constricted again.
In the next second, she started bawling her eyes out.
Ultimately, fate had taught her how to hate. The Hoffman family... I'll never let them off the hook! I want anyone who has hurt Huntley to pay the price!
Sensing her rationale slowly being consumed by resentment, Huntley's heart sank. He struggled to sit up but to no avail even after multiple attempts, as he couldn't muster any strength in his limbs.
His mother strode forward, forcefully slapped Juliana, and bellowed, “Aren't you Bailey Jefferson's disciple? Aren't you the woman of Zeke Shurmer, the patriarch of the most prestigious family in the medical field? I thought you were very capable. You got pregnant with a b*stard and violated the family's rules. In the end, you even let my son bear the consequences for you. Why didn't you die too? Tell me. Why didn't you perish alongside that b*stard!”
“Mother,” Huntley croaked.
Whipping her head around to shift her attention to her son, she uttered with an aching heart, “Are you still going to defend her? Why are you taking her side after she caused you to be harmed to this extent? Is she the only person you care about? What about me, your mother? For your sake, I endured so many years of hardship, yet you ruined your whole life because of this b*tch! Who should I depend on in the future? I waited for so many years for you to be successful. We finally managed to turn our lives around, but this situation only lasted so fleetingly before she came back and wrecked everything!”
Huntley gazed at Juliana.
Huntley gazed at Juliana.
Taking in her face, which was contorted with pain, he couldn't help but chuckle. “She saved my life. If it weren't for her, I would've died in the crocodile pond, and you wouldn't have been able to see me anymore.”
His mother was stumped.
Although she was reluctant to admit it, that was, in fact, the truth.
In the end, she glowered at Juliana and warned the latter, “I'm going to summon the doctor here. You better stay right there and not get any closer to my son. Do you hear me?”
Juliana didn't respond. She merely stared blankly at the wounds on Huntley's body, allowing the heart-wrenching pain to wash over her.
After his mother left, he said, “Your master is a doctor with superb medical skills, right? Perhaps she can cure me.”
His words were meant to comfort her as he couldn't care less whether he could regain his ability to stand.
His only hope was for the girl before him to get out of this cage that was her life and find her happiness.
Upon hearing his words, she instantly felt her hopes reignite. Juliana scrambled to the bedside and hastily wiped the tears off her face. She was about to stretch out her hand to grab his arm, but she forcefully suppressed her impulse when she saw his bloody wrists. His mother is right. I shouldn't aggravate his injuries further.
“You have a point. My master can save you. She'll definitely have a way to reconnect your severed tendons and allow you to move again like a normal person!”
Eyes riveted on her pale countenance, Huntley spoke with some difficulty. “You recently suffered a miscarriage, so your body is still too fragile at the moment. You should go back and take good care of yourself.”
“No. I won't leave. I'll stay here to keep you company.”
Huntley shook his head. “You must listen to me. Take good care of yourself. Only then can you have the strength to oppose Mr. Philip and fight your way out.”
