Chapter 706 Separation
Bailey glared at him and sprang up to her feet.
“There's nothing good about me; I'm just a wild girl, spoiled and uncultured. My reputation was already notorious, and now, with my frailty and poor health, I'm even more undeserving of your attention and selfless dedication.”
Edmund chuckled softly, struggling to sit up.
However, Bailey quickly reached out and held his shoulder, pushing him back down.
“Don't move; just lie down.”
Edmund smiled as he reached for her hand. “Bailey, I understand you are only happy when you are with Artemis. Over time, I've realized that love isn't just about possessing someone; sometimes, safeguarding them from afar is equally rewarding. So, let's make a deal. I won't intrude on your life, and you needn't concern yourself with my future. Does that sound fair?”
Hearing his words, the woman slumped onto the chair, and her head lowered slightly. After a moment of silence, she sighed. “I won't argue further since I'm indebted to you; we shall do as you wish.”
“That's good. If I can stand up again someday, I will continue to live well. If I die, I hope we'll meet earlier in our next life.”
Over in a bedroom at the Jefferson residence, Rhonda was sitting on a couch, making a phone call.
“I've administered the poison, but it's not Bailey who's poisoned; it's Artemis.”
A dead silence stretched on for a long while. Finally, a burst of hysterical laughter was heard.
“Haha, luck is on my side! I never expected Artemis to take the poison. He's definitely going to die. I was just thinking about how to deal with him, and now, thanks to your accidental mistake, he has been poisoned. You have done me a great favor.”
Rhonda said cautiously, “Bailey will be helpless if Artemis dies. If she's at your mercy, I hope you can hand her over to me.”
Sofie laughed heartily. “Of course. I wouldn't have been able to poison Artemis so easily without your help. You have done me a great favor, so I'll certainly repay you. Bailey is of no use to me. If I get hold of her, I'll send her to you as a gift. You can settle your grudges with her.”
“All right, I shall wait for your good news.”
After hanging up the call, Rhonda flashed a sinister grin.
She could have lived her whole life as a madwoman without being condemned by ethics and morality.
Yet, Bailey forcibly cured her insanity, leaving her to struggle in the abyss of pain every day. Hence, she swore to make the woman pay back for all the suffering she endured.
Bailey left the intensive care unit and went straight to the study.
As she pushed open the door, she saw Artemis sitting unscathed on the sofa, chatting with Zeke. She couldn't help but heave a sigh of relief.
“What are you talking about?” she asked.
Zeke glanced at her and said indifferently, “Sofie went to Moranta after leaving the country.”
Bailey arched her brow and walked over to sit next to Artemis.
“Moranta is the Hoffman family's old stronghold. It seems that woman is really connected to the Hoffman family. I just don't know if her conspirator is Raymond or Philip.”
Zeke said, “Anyway, we have to pay the Hoffman family a visit, and when the time comes, we'll eliminate her. We need to eradicate any future troubles.”
Nodding, Bailey grasped Artemis' wrist to take his pulse. “How are you feeling? Do you have any discomfort? I'm not sure if there was a problem with the drink, but if it's really poisoned, I should be able to cure you. Luckily, there are no signs of poisoning from your pulse reading.”
Artemis smiled and clasped her wrist. “That proves I'm not poisoned. Don't worry; my body is fine. If I feel any discomfort, I'll tell you right away. Besides, there's no way I can hide the truth from the divine doctor before me.”
After breaking free from his grip, Bailey grabbed his other arm and tried to read his pulse. Still, she found nothing. “Never mind; maybe I'm just being paranoid. I was wrong to think you were poisoned.”
Artemis could not help but grin. Suddenly, he changed the subject and said, “By the way, Holden and the others plan to take Yvette back to Tarragon headquarters for trial. That's the only way to clear the charges against Shannon and prove her innocence.”
Bailey could guess his intentions. She furrowed her brows and asked, “Are you making a trip to the Tarragon headquarters?”
“Yeah. I am the leader, and this matter is of great importance. Moreover, I need to deal with the elder personally.”
Bailey suppressed her desire to accompany Artemis as she was mindful of Edmund's critical condition.
Hence, she replied, “We need to think carefully about every decision we make and not act recklessly. I'm not worried since Holden and Micah will protect you. When do you plan to leave?”
After pondering for a while, Artemis replied, “Probably in the next two days. Sofie is likely to cause trouble again now that she has escaped. We must resolve the internal turmoil in Tarragon as soon as possible, or we will be vulnerable to attacks.”
“Okay, go ahead. There's no need to worry about me. We have dealt with the danger in Hallsbay. Moreover, with the Saviors protecting me, nothing can go wrong.”
When Zeke saw Artemis reach out and caress Bailey's cheek, he sensibly left the study.
“You must promise me you'll do your best in everything and not be ruthless or arrogant. The children and I can't live without you.” Bailey wrapped her arms around Artemis' neck and looked at him tenderly.
The man leaned in and kissed her lips. “I'm sorry, but I have to leave you again for a brief period. After I settle the internal strife in Tarragon, I will hand over my power to Holden and Micah. From then on, I will only stay by your side and protect you forever.”
While Bailey touched his chest to feel his strong heartbeat, her thoughts wandered.
Something doesn't feel quite right, but I can't put my finger on it. Did I miss something? Why is my heart palpitating so strongly?
Suddenly, her head began to spin, and she let out a squeal, “Artemis, what are you doing?”
The man hugged her and headed toward the door. “We are about to be separated, so shouldn't we hurry to our room to enjoy each other's company?”
Bailey blushed and hammered him on the chest. “Can you please act seriously in broad daylight?”
“You can be serious with others but not with your wife,” Artemis replied seductively.
At White Crane Cemetery in the suburbs, two figures stood in the snow, silently gazing at the unmarked tombstone before them.
Shannon's reddened eyes were brimming with tears, threatening to spill at any moment.
