Chapter 782 Collapsed Lung And Broken Ribs
Not long after Olivia left, Zayron came over in a rush. A large group of people followed him. His gaze swept the surroundings, and when he found nothing unusual, he suddenly exploded with frustration.
“What are you doing here all by yourself? Eating dirt? And where's the person who intercepted you? Have they died?” Zephyr glared at him as the former walked toward the car.
“You're late. They've already left.”
“Damn!”
Zayron hurriedly went after him and asked, “She intercepted you, and then she just left without doing anything?” Zephyr nodded.
“Yes. She muttered some gibberish, and then she left.” Zayron rolled his eyes. A strange glint flashed in his pupils.
“Buddy, let me stay with my mother. I'm used to seeing these two-faced and phony women trying to take advantage of her. From my experience, this isn't as simple as it seems. That old witch hated you a lot and even wished for your early death. Yet, she's acting so strangely now. Something fishy is going on.”
Zephyr abruptly stopped in his tracks, as the image of the mist rising inside the old woman's car when he had climbed in involuntarily surfaced in his mind.
Although the smell was not pungent, and it did not cause him any substantial harm, but a casual remark from Zayron reminded him that something was definitely amiss.
Olivia would not harm Zephyr, because she still wanted Justin to marry Scarlett. So, she would not go too far and force Justin into a desperate situation. So, what was her reason for intercepting him?
“Could it be that he wants you to kill your mother with your own hands?” Zayron's voice rang in Zephyr's ears, instantly giving him an epiphany. Yes, the old woman certainly wanted to kill his mother. As for how she planned to achieve her goal, he had no idea.
The only thing that puzzled him was the mist filling the entire carriage. Could there be some mystery hidden within?
At that thought, Zephyr leaned in to sniff his own sleeves, but he did not detect any unusual odor.
“Let's head back to the medical base.”
Right after he said that, he got into the car. Zayron rolled his eyes and muttered, “Crazy,” before following suit and crawling in.
Upon their arrival at the medical base, Zephyr did not enter the ward to check on Veronique.
Instead, he went straight to the study. Justin saw him return and asked with a chuckle, “Did you have a good time at your granddad's birthday celebration?”
Despite saying that, he knew that Bill must be unhappy. How could Bill, as Veronique's close relative, have the heart to hold a grand birthday banquet when her life now hangs by a thread?
Zephyr did not answer his question. Instead, he briefly told Justin what had happened on the way back. After hearing that, Justin's handsome expression instantly fell.
Olivia loathed Veronique terribly, so much so that she would wish for the latter's death. Justin knew that all too well. The last time she had murderous intentions, he strictly forbade her from approaching the medical base. After that, she restrained herself.
But he knew that as long as Veronique was still alive, Olivia would do everything in her power to kill her. At the moment, she could neither bribe the medical staff nor take matters into her own hands. So, it was no surprise that she had set her sights on Zephyr.
“Is the mist colorless and odorless? Besides the mist, is there anything else?” Zephyr furrowed his brows as he dug through his memories.
“Back then, the inside was quite dark, so I couldn't make out the color of the mist. As for the smell, there wasn't any.”
After saying that, he extended his arm in front of Justin and continued, “Logically, there should be quite a bit of water vapor on my clothes, but there's no smell at all.”
Justin lowered his head and sniffed twice. Indeed, there was no other smell besides the scent of the fabric.
At that moment, the door to the study swung open and in walked Zain. Seeing Justin and Zephyr both frowning, with similar expressions of seriousness, he asked curiously, “What's going on with you two?”
With a faint sigh, Justin explained the situation to Zain. After hearing that, Zain strode toward Zephyr, squatted down, and sniffed his coat.
“There is indeed a faint medicinal scent. My sense of smell is different from other people, so I can detect it.”
When Justin heard that, his face looked even grimmer. A medicinal scent meant that there was indeed an issue with the mist.
Moreover, the fact that Olivia had managed to get it onto Zephyr made it all the more intriguing.
He knew that Olivia would not have the intention to harm Zephyr for the time being, so the medicinal scent in the mist was not targeted at Zephyr. So...
As Zain removed Zephyr's clothes, he explained, “I still can't tell what ingredients have been mixed in, what their effects are, and what functions they serve. What we can do is send these clothes for testing. Don't let Zephyr visit Veronique in her ward just yet. If I'm not mistaken, this drug is likely meant for Veronique. Thankfully, Zephyr was smart enough not to go straight to Veronique's ward but come to you instead. Otherwise, it would have caused more trouble. First, get him washed up with saline and then disinfect his entire body with alcohol. Understood?” Justin scowled and nodded solemnly.
“All right, I know what to do. Thank you for your help. Once you have the result, please inform me as soon as possible.”
Zephyr remained speechless. In the living room at the Xuereb residence, Olivia was holding Scarlett's wrist. Smiling, she said, “Don't worry, everything is going smoothly. As long as there's no issue with your drug, Veronique will undoubtedly die within the next couple of days.” Scarlett grinned, hoping that this time fate would favor her.
She had no more bargaining chips left. For now, her father's illness had not been made public, so there was still a sense of peace. If the news of her father stepping down was announced, she would lose her value to the Xuereb family and could only leave in embarrassment. She was doing all this just to survive.
Veronique, don't blame me for what's happened to you. You were in my way, so of course I would have to deal with you. Put yourself in my shoes, and I believe you would make the same choice if you were in my position.
“Mrs. Xuereb, thank you. Rest assured, within a year, I will get the Campbell family into the capital, and by then, Mr. Silas will surely become one of the capital's elites.”
“All right. I thank you too. Thank you so much.”
Olivia's smiled delightfully. After all, she had gone against her conscience and done so many unspeakable things just so her family could have a place in Dellmoor.
Rely on Silas to work his way up on his own? Gosh, he might only be able to be an unimportant official in Hallsbay for his entire life. Only with the support of the Fletcher family can the Campbell family make great leaps and soar to great heights.
Inside the VIP ward of the infirmary at Tarragon Headquarters, which was Micah's residence, Bailey fiddled with the stethoscope in her hand.
She said, “His entire lung has collapsed, and several ribs are broken. Although the injury has been treated, it's quite severe. Be prepared for a long period of bed rest. He'll need help to have all his basic needs met.”
Shannon leaned against the equipment, her gaze falling on Micah who had tubes attached all over his body. His face was as pale as a sheet of paper, his breathing weak, and his heartbeat intermittent and unstable. Having known him for so many years, she had never seen him in such a miserable state.
In order to win her back, he had actually risked his own life and teamed up with Dawn to stage such a dangerous feat. Did he know how perilous it was?
