In a neighborhood where aesthetics were top priority, air conditioning units were cleverly tucked away in hard-to-spot corners. Most folks wouldn't notice, but right beside one of those units, a little child was hiding.
Henry, snug in his dad's arms, was having his face gently iced by his father. With a shaky little voice, he was telling his dad about how he got picked on.
Even if his words weren't clear, the distress in Henry's tone was unmistakable.
Andre, gazing into his son's eyes, might not have fully understood, but he played along, "Really? That’s how it went down?"
Henry, with a sad little whimper, pouted his lips, looking even more pitiful.
"Did you stand up for yourself?" Andre asked.
"Yeah, I fought back," Henry replied in his tiny voice.
Andre wiped the grime off his son's face, praising him, "That's my smart boy. You’re daddy's little treasure, right?"
Henry knew "treasure" meant he was loved. He puckered up and gave his dad a kiss on the cheek. "Mommy told me to go do my business by myself."
Mia tilted her head, still trying to place the familiar faces in the distance. Before she could get a closer look, Andre pulled her close with his long arm, blocking her view with his chest. "Mia, are you thinking of hitting me?"
Mia looked confused, "Why would I hit you?"
"Our son said you were going to," Andre explained.
It wasn’t until they were in the car that Mia got what Henry meant. "No, Henry was trying to say I told him to go poop by himself and hide. It's not about hitting you. He just mixed up the words."
"Take!"
