Andre had a mask on, covering his whole face.
He hadn’t set foot in the ring for years, but tonight, for Mia, he grabbed the ropes with one hand and vaulted right in.
The crowd was already wild, the energy pulsing through the room.
But Andre didn’t care about the cheers or the shouts—he only had eyes for Mia.
Mia blinked, uncomfortable under his stare. She nudged her friend. “Molly, that guy keeps looking at me. It’s kind of creeping me out.”
Molly squinted. “Why’s he got a mask on? Why not just wear some face paint or something?”
Mia turned for a better look. “Yeah, what’s the deal with that?”
People were getting restless, waiting for the match to start, but “Auntie” Mia was still down there, chatting away.
No one in the crowd noticed the poor host off to the side, nervously gulping and wiping sweat from his forehead.
Andre gave a little cough. The host jumped to attention, nerves making him trip over his words. “Um, now… contestants, please step into the ring.”
Mia narrowed her eyes. “Hey, don’t you think he looks kind of familiar?”
Molly leaned in. “Nope. But I’m dying to see what’s under that mask.”
The host, standing next to the boss, repeated himself, voice shaky. “Both contestants, please get in the ring.”
Mia snapped to. “Oh, that’s me.”
She stood up, grabbed the ropes with both hands, and, just like before, hopped into the ring.
The host let out a huge sigh of relief and hurried off.
Then, suddenly remembering, he came back, pretending to check his whistle while he rattled off the rules.
Mia always liked to size up her opponent before a match, but the more she looked, the more she thought—why is his build so much like her husband’s?
She eyed his hands. Wait, why are they painted?
Behind the mask, Andre watched his clever, nosy little wife. The stuff on his hands? All part of the plan—he wasn’t about to let her figure him out.
Mia frowned, still stumped. “Hey, what’s your name?”
