Bruce didn’t dare stick around any longer. “I’m gonna head upstairs and call Naomi, see when she’s coming home.” They’d all had enough fun for one day.
All four men were missing their wives. Mr. Calder didn’t even look at his son—he’d rather be at the office, calling his wife. “Babe, when are you coming back?”
Mia hugged their son, wiping away his tears. Both mother and son shot Andre a look that said, “This is your fault.”
Andre glanced over at his sister, but Molly turned her face away, watching the father and son instead.
“Chad?” he called out.
“Yeah,” Chad replied.
The two men didn’t need to say anything else—there was an unspoken understanding between them.
Andre scooped up his two kids and headed upstairs.
Chad took one of his kids’ hands and followed.
Downstairs, Hansen was halfway through a bowl of sunflower seeds. “Wait, that’s it? Game over already?”
…
Upstairs in the bedroom, Andre was pacing, clearly ticked off. “Did Henry really toss my socks in the toilet?”
Henry looked up at his dad, confused about why he was being called out again.
Mia said, “Honey, just let it go. If you don’t know for sure, you can pretend it never happened. It’s easier on your mind.”
Andre grumbled, “Alright, let’s talk about you. I told you not to mess with The Silent Ring—so why did you? Is that Black Pass really worth it? I told you, I’d get it for you. If you really want in, I’ll figure something out, okay?”
Seeing his dad so angry, Henry stopped whining and just looked at his mom. This time, it was Mom who’d gotten Dad worked up.
But Mia was stubborn as ever. She shook her head.
“So the back door’s closed again?” Andre asked sharply.
Henry kept glancing between his parents.
Mia said, “Well, I can’t just leave it open all the time. If people see, they’ll say I didn’t earn my spot.”
Henry immediately looked back at his mom.
