Max suddenly rolled over.
He unlocked his phone and found a private album.
There was only one picture in it, a picture of Eloise.
That picture was taken a couple of years ago. Back then, he was always staying up late working, and Eloise would always wait for him at home, preparing food for him. One night, she waited too long and fell asleep at the table.
Her face was pure and innocent, like an obedient child.
When he came home exhausted and saw Eloise sleeping, he felt a wave of tenderness.
For no particular reason, he took a picture of that moment.
Later on, he started pursuing Orlena and broke up with Eloise in a heartbeat, but he never had the heart to delete that picture... Max himself didn't know why.
He didn't even like her that much!
He wasn't even that good to her!
He stared at the photo for a long time until he heard a knock at the door. It was his mother's voice, "Max, I need to talk to you."
Max responded and put his phone away.
His mother came in and saw how tired her son looked. It pained her heart, but there were some things that needed to be said.
"Max, whatever happened with Eloise is in the past."
"You're already engaged to Orlena, you can't do her dirty!"
"Plus, Eloise is living with some other guy now, her reputation is bound to take a hit sooner or later. How could we, the Velona family, accept a woman like that as your wife?"
Aliza's words were sharp.
Max frowned and replied coldly, "She doesn't plan on being with me either." He picked up his jacket, as if he was going out.
His mother called after him, "Where are you going?"
"Back to the office."
Max got into his sports car, but didn't start it right away.
He closed his eyes, thinking about his mother's words, especially the part about "Eloise is now living with another man." It felt worse than death.
He wondered if Eloise wouldn't have ended up with Harvey if he hadn't pushed her so hard.
