The Babysitter novel Chapter 20

Chapter 20: (Aubrey's POV)- Shit!

We were finishing up dinner in a comfortable silence until Catherine broke it. "Aubrey, honey," she caught my attention. "Do you plan on coming tomorrow?" she questioned.

I was confused but kept it hidden. "Um- yeah I was planning to. Why?" I asked.

She seemed hesitant but she explained anyway. "I was thinking you should get a day off. You've been coming every day," she laughed but it wasn't genuine it seemed a little... nervous?

"I like coming here. I won't if you don't want me to. I understand if there's something important that I shouldn't be here for," I informed her as I felt Xavier stiffen beside me.

"Yeah, there's something like that. You can come the day after though. You can get back on schedule then," she smiled sadly.

"Why? No, I want her here tomorrow. It's been fine so far," Xavier spoke up from beside me.

"Honey, I know you two enjoy each other's company but not tomorrow," Catherine said a little more seriously and sternly.

"Why, mom?" His hands formed into fists under the table which I could see from my peripheral vision.

"It's okay." I awkwardly laughed, sensing the tension in the air.

"No, it's not. It's not like anyone's coming to see me or anything important is happening. I met you and I have fun with you, more than anyone else." He turned to me and ranted in pure anger.

"Something important is happening! Your father is coming!" Catherine shouted in rage, making me jump slightly. She was scary when she was mad.

The table went silent. You could hear a pin drop I'm not even kidding.

"It's just one day," I whispered to Xavier.

"I don't wanna see him. And it has nothing to do with her. I'm not meeting him," Xavier spoke, leaving no room for argument.

"You don't have a choice, Xavier."

I guess there is room for argument.

I sat there silently beside him while he fumed in anger while Catherine stormed into her room.

"Walk me out?" I whispered to him. I stood up and grabbed all my things quietly, heading to the front door.

"Keys," he spoke from behind me.

I turned to see him standing so close, our chests touched.

He placed them in my hand before locking his hand in my other one. We walked in silence to my bike where I placed all my belongings in the basket.

I turned to him to see him visibly upset. Extremely upset. "It's just one day. You can call me anytime." I tugged on his hand a little trying to slightly lighten the mood but it wasn't exactly working.

He shook his head. "I want you here," he told me stiffly. "I don't give a shit what my mom says." His grip on my hand tightened.

I knew it.

I'm falling for Xavier Parker and it's going to ruin me.

"I'll be here." I nodded after a moment of hesitation. I looked up to see his eyes meeting mine with utter shock and surprise.

"You will? Really?" he asked, sounding a little happier than before.

I nodded at him. "If you want me here, then I'll be here." I shrugged. "Usual time?" I questioned.

"I'll let you know when I find out when he's getting here." He gave me a small smile.

"He's coming. Right now, earlier!" he spoke, pacing around the house.

"Whoa wait, what's going on? He's coming now?" I asked, panicking because he was panicking now pacing around with him. We were just pacing around when we heard a car pulling up into the driveway. We ran to the kitchen window and peered out of it together.

"Shit!" we hissed simultaneously. "Whoa, that's the first time you've sworn." He looked at me with wide eyes. I gave him a bewildered look. That's what he's thinking about right now? "We've got to run, come on." He grabbed my hand, taking me up with him, sprinting up the stairs as the front door slowly opened.

We ran straight into his room. We sat down on the edge of his bed, relaxing and just talking for about twenty minutes after we had calmed down. Suddenly, shouts and voices of a heated argument erupted through the house, changing the atmosphere very quickly. We both were instantly serious and clueless.

"Will, wait! You can't just see him!" The voice of Catherine screaming snapped us back to reality.

"Of course I can! He's my son!" A strong voice of a man shouted back.

"He doesn't want to see you! He's not ready!" she screamed, reasoning with him.

Footsteps approached the room and I froze.

"Hide in the closet." He stood up.

I quickly grabbed all my things and went straight into his closet, behind all the clothing.

He sat on the bed, feigning boredom.

I peeked through the blinds of the closet door to see a man in his late forties walking through the door.

He stood in front of Xavier as Xavier stood up, towering over him in the slightest, maybe his fluffy hair made it look like that I don't know. "What the hell is this that I hear? You're on house arrest?" Will, who I know is his dad spoke with a terrifying calmness to his voice.

"Good to see you too, Will," Xavier spoke sarcastically and bitterly. I didn't miss how he called him Will. God, he really did hate him.

That's when I noticed his knuckles going white and I knew this wasn't going to end well. Will shook his head before screaming, "You landed yourself on house arrest?"
