Harmony POV.
I land on my knees beside Mystique, not looking at Joel who is spluttering and choking on his blood. I move my shaky hands to check her over. My hand moves to her chest, feeling something warm and slick.
He shot her; she took the bullet meant for me.
“Mystique, no, no, no, no. Get someone to help. He shot her. Come on, girl, you will be OK,” I say even though I know deep down I am kidding myself.
The doctor comes over, kneeling beside me, and checks her over.
“Here, let me help. We need to stop the bleeding, but she needs someone who is a vet that specialises in big cats.” He says as he adds pressure to Mystique’s wound.
“Tank, he used to work at the zoo. He would know. Dad, get Tank in here now!” I scream as I run my hand through Mystique’s fur. She isn’t whimpering or yowling, she is laying still just watching me. She is panting hard, but is calm.
I hate what she had to endure to become the killing machine she was bred to be.
“Baby, she will be ok. Come on,” Mav says as he squats beside me and I shake my head furiously, biting my bottom lip to stop the sob from leaving my throat. My vision blurs with unshed tears as I whisper soothing, encouraging words to Mystique.
When Tank enters the room talking on the phone and giving instructions to the human doctor on what to do. I look around the room and stand stumbling over Joel’s dead body towards the bed, ripping the sheets off. My momma helps and we rip the sheets in to long pieces so we can make some makeshift bandages.
We hand them to Mav as he works alongside the doctor to stem the flow of blood. I see the doc moving his hands feeling around the area and I know he is checking for the bullet.
“Can you find it? We need to remove it.” I say and he looks up at me, his hands covered in her blood, and he shakes his head.
“She will need surgery and a blood transfusion. I don’t know how far the nearest zoo is that may stock the relative blood she needs. It would have to be blood from either a tiger or a panther. It can’t be any other big cat blood.” He says and I look at Tank and he is still talking on the phone.
“Come on Mystique, you can fight this. I can’t lose you. I owe you my life, more than once. You’re doing so well. I promise if you pull through this, I will give you the best life any cat will have. Hell, I will move to a huge house with its own land so you can roam and hunt. Just please pull through.” I say, my tears coming thick and fast.
Mystique moves her head and looks at me before she moves to her feet and everyone moves out of the way. I remain still on my knees. Her rough tongue licks my face and I stroke her head.
“Stay down Mystique, everything will be ok.” I say as I continue to stroke her head. I look at the doctor and he and Mav continue to wrap her in the torn bed sheets.
“Get rid of him. I don’t want to see him. Once we move Mystique, burn the place to the ground. Are the victims safe?” I ask, not taking my eyes from the green ones that are watching me as she chuffs. I don’t want to look at Joel.
“Don’t worry about it, princess, everything will be taken care of.” My dad says as we hear a car pull up. Who the hell is that? I don’t move because if I do, Mystique will follow me. So far, she is calm and I don’t want her to be in pain.
“Lay back down sweet girl, it will be ok,” I say to her and she huffs and does as I ask and I smile at her. I hear boots running up the stairs and pick up the gun next to me and turn and aim just as three people enter the room. Two were wearing khaki green polo tops and one wearing overalls carrying a bag.
“Who are you?” I ask as Tank walks over and shakes hands with the one in the overalls and the man and woman with him.
“This is my friend, Noah. He is the vet to the big cats in the zoo I used to work for. These two work with big cats. I had them on standby in case she was hurt. They weren’t too far away.” Tank tells me and I look at them and lower the gun as Mystique yowls.
“Mr Noah and colleagues, can you please help save my Patger?” I say and they snap out of their daze and jump into action.
I move away to give the vet and the assistants some room to work, but I keep my eyes on them.
“She needs blood and we need to remove the bullet. Samantha set up the anaesthesia, Alan get the blood bags ready, we need something to hang the bag from. Doctor, can you assist me?” The vet says as Mav wraps me in his arms and kisses my head. The wig is long gone and so is the orange face paint.
