Angel POV.
It has been a few days and we are heading to the hospital to see momma. Dad told us she is now more alert and has asked for us repeatedly and so we are heading there now to see her. But before we do. I have an appointment in the prenatal department. The last time we were heading for a prenatal appointment was the day I lost the baby. So my nerves are shot to hell.
I’ve had a bit of morning sickness, combine that with the stress of everything that has happened recently I’m a hot mess. We all are. Gianni is still in the red room and the mountains are working on him every day. Apparently, Cassandria has as well. The phrase is true never judge a book by its cover. She doesn’t look like the type of woman that will cut off your limbs, but she is.
Gianni has lost a few fingers and toes, teeth, and an ear. I threw up when I was told. Nate being Nate told me and I wished he hadn’t. Just the thought of it makes me gag. But apparently it was necessary in the interrogation side of things. Gianni has given up everything to do with the auctions. Locations, participants you name it, he has divulged it. But still he is tortured every day. Until such times as my dad decides he will end him.
Rebel is with us as she wants to see her nonna, so we have bought her along to see the first images of the little bean that is growing inside of me. I should only be about four weeks along maybe less.
The trip doesn’t take long and Ryder has his hand on my thigh the entire ride as Rebel sings her nursery rhymes from the backseat.
“Get out of your head, Angel. Everything will be fine.” He gives me a squeeze and I take a few breaths to calm myself down. Blaze and Coral have been calling to find out what happened and so Ryder has been filling the MC in.
Ice and Ripper returned home a few days ago to inform Hatchet. To say they were all shocked is an understatement. No one would have thought Gianni was capable of this. But looks can be deceiving again. Never judge a book.
“Everything will be OK,” He says to me again as we make the turn into the hospital parking lot. The nerves have set in and I have butterflies in my stomach. What if something is wrong? What if it was a false positive? What if …
“Ok, we’re here. Let’s go and see and then go and see nonna.” He says, pulling me out of my downward spiral. I open the door and climb out, walking to the back of the SUV and opening the door to see Ryder is already unclipping Rebel, so I grab her things.
“Ok Rebel. You need to be a good girl, this is a hospital and …” He says to her, waiting for her to answer.
“Sick people go to the hospital. So I need to be good and no running around.” She says and I smile at her as Ryder kisses her head and setting her on her feet. She is mature for her age, but at times she can be a little demon, but most kids are.
We walk, each holding one of Rebel’s hands, the closer we get to the doors. My heart is beating out of my chest. I have never liked hospitals, but I know it doesn’t always mean something bad.
We make our way to the prenatal department. Rebel is looking around at all the pictures of pregnant ladies and tiny babies. She looks at me and I smile at her.
“Mommy, do you have a baby in your tummy?” she asks, tilting her head to the side, looking at my flat stomach and looking back at the picture on the wall.
“That’s what we are going to find out.” I say to her and she frowns, thinking of what to say. It was hard for us all when I lost the last baby. I never thought I would be ready for another one after what happened. But I know life moves on, even though I never felt the kicks and wiggles, heard its heartbeat, it will always be in my head and heart.
“But you don’t look fat mommy, you are like me.” she pats her stomach and I stifle a chuckle as Ryder roars with laughter at her observation. What do you say to that? This girl of ours leaves me bug eyed and speechless. God help me when she is older.
“Rebel, that lady in the picture isn’t fat. She has a baby in her belly. Babies grow to be big so they can be born. Just like you did. Was mommy fat when you were in my tummy?” I ask her gently because she has seen the pictures of me being round and pregnant.
Even Ryder has, and we talked about what it was like going through it alone. I showed him all the scan pictures, and I documented everything. I think deep down I knew one day we would end up back together, and I didn’t want him to feel like a failure for not being there. It was my choice to run back then.
“No, mommy. You looked beautiful.” She says and I hear a few women in the waiting room all chuckle and say aww. Rebel is precious, but that mouth of hers will get her into trouble one day.
