Chapter 168
“Heath,” Allison bent down, stroking the little boy’s short hair
Heath was multering to himself, but his eyes lit up when he saw Allison, “Did you come to see me?”
The little boy’s smile was bright.
A warmth filled Allison, and she answered the boy’s question, “Yes, I kept my promise”
The facilities at Mercy Grove Hospital were quite average, the only advantage being its spacious grounds, a vast lawn, and a garden for entertainment. Allison watched the children running on the lawn and smiled
“Why is Heath here?”
“When he first came, he was very unruly every day. So his parents came to visit every few days, then every few weeks, and then every few months. The last time Heath’s parents came here was three months ago. The kid is actually quite smart but just a bit odd, I heard he had some sort of trauma when he was young, and he’s been like this since.”
Laura pointed to another little girl. “That girl has been here for five years, longer than I’ve worked here, She witnessed her parents‘ car accident, and she’s been like this since, hardly talks and always plays alone.”
Allison had been there for a while when she suddenly remembered Adrian was also there.
She said to Laura, “I’m going to use the restroom”
“Go ahead, there’s one on the first floor.”
At this time, Adrian, dressed in a cleaner’s uniform, slowly climbed the stairs. He wore a mask, so only a pair of old eyes and gray hair were visible, making him look over sixty.
“Hey, you, come here Suddenly, the iron door opened, and a male voice called out.
“Come clean the toilet”
Adrian quickly lowered his head and said, “All right”
This was his first time being able to go to the sixth floor after working as a cleaner there for a week.
He walked with his head down, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a group of guards standing at the end of the corridor in front of a ward door.
Pulling his pants up, one of them headed to the restroom and glanced at Adrian, “How come the cleaner changed today?”
Another one said, “Isn’t it better this way? We’re all men, and every time a female cleaner comes in to clean, it’s so inconvenient.”
Adrian was cleaning the sink inside the restroom and listening to the men outside.
“If a pretty female cleaner came up, we wouldn’t have to…”
“Ha ha..”
“How much longer do we have to stay here? We’ve been here for several months now, guarding a half–dead middle–aged woman, and we can’t even leave freely. This is so boring, and we can’t even see a pretty nurse!!”
“We’ve been paid, so we must do the job” The man looked around and lowered his voice, “I think she’s not going to make it much longer; look, she’s even
on a ventilator.”
“It’s unbelievable. Wasn’t she full of life and knitting sweaters just a while ago? Wasn’t her kidney disease almost cured? How did things suddenly get worse?”
Adrian’s movements paused.
His eyes also trembled slightly.
