Chapter 13: A Crush
“No, it’s fine. I was just confused with the amount of food,” she said, only to pause. She just noticed that he was spreading butter on his bread and realized he was very graceful while he
ate.
Daniel caught her staring at his hands and wondered what she was thinking about when she should be eating.
“Do you expect me to feed you?” he asked and realizing she had been caught spacing out, her ears turned red and she shook her head hurriedly.
“No, I was not thinking that,” she denied hurriedly and immediately picked some egg rolls to place on her plate. The sight of her shaking her head looked like a bunny caught doing something wrong. It was a sight he found both cute and amusing.
“Sometimes I wonder what goes on in that pretty little head of yours,” he commented.
She had only started eating when her phone rang. She stopped and picked it the moment she saw the caller Id.
“Doctor Martin, Good morning,” she said and Daniel’s movements slowed as he looked up from his food at her.
“Miss Harris, your grandmother has just come into the hospital to see your mother. I thought you would want to know,” he said. Hearing his words, Anya’s eyes darkened.
“Really? Please help me call the police. Inform them that she has a restraining order. They will come get her,” she said to him.
“Okay then, I have some patients to attend to, I will call you later,” he said.
“I will come visit my mother later today, I will call you then. Thank you Doctor Martin,” she said with a smile that offended Daniel greatly.
“He is your mother’s doctor?” he could not help but ask when she placed the phone down.
“No, he has been really helpful to us though,” she said and continues eating.
“You are not going to check on her immediately?” he said and she realized he heard her conversation on the phone yesterday and must have put the two together.
“It’s fine. My mother is fine, she is in good hands. As for the old woman, since she wants a flogging, she should go. My mother has not exercised her mouth for a while,” Anya scuffed and continued eating.
Daniel wanted to ask what her mother’s illness was, but he held back. It was not his concern.
He only planned to keep her around for no longer than a month. It is best if they are not too involved in each other’s personal matters.
In the hospital, Old Madam Jones ignored the nurses and barged into the general ward. She glanced round the room and her eyes settled on the middle aged woman eating an apple on the
bed.
This was Anya’s mother, Stella Jones. Even though she had thinned significantly, her face still looked the same, her slightly graying front hair being the only thing different to her face. The moment Stella saw the old woman walk in, her face fell.
“Are you here to see if I have died?” she asked and the old woman approaching paused slightly before proceeding to stand in front of Stella’s bed.
“Is t
this how you address your mother you have not seen in years?” Old Madam Jones asked in
dissatisfaction.
“Mother? Whose mother? It can’t be mine. I remember you refused to take out money to help with my hospital bills and said it was better to give it to a bigger one than to give me a cent, when I was struggling to pay the hospital bills. Why are you here? You even tried to sell me a few years ago and was given a restraining order. You still dare to say you are my mother? I can’t afford a mother like you. Please leave.” Stella said and others in the ward quieted down to listen. Her words were so shocking that they stopped to listen.
“What nonsense are you sprouting? If I really tried to sell you, would I still be standing here and not in prison? I told you it was a misunderstanding,” Old Madam Jones defended. She was uncomfortable with the eyes that had descended on her and immediately clarified.
“Ah, that is true, there is no evidence so the police could only issue a restraining order against you. But that is not the first time you tried to sell me,” she said and the old lady went pale, “It can’t be that you think there is no evidence for that one, right? You are only standing there, because I have not reported it. I have already cut ties with your family. So please do not walk around claiming to be my mother,
“Fine, you don’t want me as your mother. There is no problem. But since you have cut ties- with the family, Have your daughter attend her cousin’s wedding and we will call it even,” Old madam said.
“Is your company going down? Is that why you are thinking of using my daughter? But, isn’t your failing company good news? Why are you acting as though my daughter must help you?” Stella asked in excitement.
“It seems she has already told you that I called her yesterday. You really want all of us on the streets before you are satisfied?” the old woman scolded.
“How is it my business if you sleep on the streets? And don’t go around asking things of my daughter you do not deserve. Do you think she has time for your family?”
“Then since she knows the CEO of Star Tech, she should say some good words for her cousin at least right? She could even call for help for her uncle. Do you know what your brother is facing at work? Do you have any conscience?” The old woman’s voice kept rising as she spoke.
