Chapter 28: Confrontation 

“I don’t think so. She has already been polding holes at the narrative all day, so I know she is trying to fix this, but the divorce was going to happen eventually,” he said grimly. He did not know why he was not happy about this. 

When they had finished reading, Daniel spoke up, his voice was cold and somber, mirroring the mood in the room. “It is time to announce the project. The most important thing is that we are not forced to.” he said. He was not afraid of the room being bugged with listening devices, as he had brought in a specialist to sweep a few rooms before time. 

His father and brothers nodded in agreement, their expressions grim as they processed the information. They knew the stakes were high, and they understood they were under attack at this moment. They could not allow outsiders to win. 

“What do you plan to do?“Mr Shaw asked his son 

“Anya as a plan.” Daniel continued, his voice becoming gentle as he spoke. “She had already talked to the agent involved, making her suspicious of the bank account. We suspect even the accountant has been taken in.” 

His father and brothers exchanged looks, “This is what you have been doing since this morning?” 

“What?” he asked. 

“I just thought you would be handling your failing marriage,” Jason said. 

“We have agreed to deal with it, after this is done,” he cleared his throat and moved on. 

“There is only one thing we have not done. It is a gamble. All you have to do is pretend nothing happened. 

“Daniel, this is a bold move,” he said, his tone measured. 

“I know, But I believe it may be our only option. We cannot afford to let others control the narrative.” Daniel nodded in agreement, his eyes flashing a sly glint. “We will be acting in a good movie soon.” 

The party continued to swirl around Anya as she conversed with Mary, the music and laughter providing a lively backdrop to their conversation. However, her attention was suddenly diverted as Lena approached her from a distance. She almost let out a smile when she saw her. She was finally here. 

“Anya, I need to speak with you,” Lena said, her voice low and urgent. 

Anya nodded, suppressing the coldness in her eye. “Of course, Lena. Let’s find somewhere private to talk,” she said. 

They made their way to a secluded room away from the hustle and bustle of the party, sounds of laughter fading into the background as they closed the door behind them.

Once they were alone, Lena wasted no time in getting to the point. “Anya, where is the gift your mother sent to Mr. Shaw?” 

Anya raised an eyebrow, a chill flashing in her eyes. “Why do you want to know, Lena? What’s going on? Is it important?” 

Lena’s expression darkened, her features twisting as she spoke, “Just answer the question, Anya. Where is the gift?” 

Anya sighed, dismissively, “I don’t know, Lena, Daniel said it is in my i 

cabin. Why 

are you so interested in it? Why are you so interested in where things are kept here?” Anya pressed, walking closer. 

Before Lena could respond, Anya dropped a bombshell of her own. “Actually, there’s something I need to tell you. I thought I would wait till after the party but, what the heck… I’m getting a divorce.” 

Lena’s eyes widened in shock, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “What?! 

she exclaimed, her voice rising in disbelief. “Anya, you can’t be serious!” 

Anya held Lena’s gaze, her own expression amused. “Why can’t I be serious? You know how waiting we got together in the first place. Did you actually think we would last? Or, were you for us to break up at the right moment?” Anya asked, “We are announcing it tonight.” 

“You can’t. Are you even listening to yourself?” 

“Why?” Anya asked offhandedly, “Do you perhaps happen to have plans for my marriage?” 

“Just don’t do anything reckless tonight!” Lena insisted. “I am doing this for your own good. You can trust me, Anya. You know that,” 

These words, she had heard them a thousand times over. These were the w where she was right now. For her own good? She felt the need to scoff. 

“It is my marriage, not yours. Stay out of it!” Anya sneered.

Lena’s face flushed with anger, her features contorting with rage. “How dare you, Anya! You will do as you’re told, do you understand me?!” Anya knew that Lena was not used to those. words not working, that is why she exploded. Telling her to do as she was told. This was probably how Lena saw her. Lena felt that Anya is supposed to be under her thumb. 

Anya felt a surge of anger rise within her, her patience wearing thin. “What is so important about tonight? Is it related to my mother’s gift? You think I don’t know what you are about to do?” 

Lena’s eyes narrowed, her voice dripping with venom. “You’re making a mistake, Anya. If you don’t behave yourself tonight, there will be consequences.

Anya felt a surge of anger boil up inside her, her frustration reaching its breaking point.” Consequences? Like what, will you frame your own family for a crime?” Anya asked. 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Lena finally realized that Anya knew something. When she saw the chill in Anya’s eyes, she could not help but step backwards. 

“No matter what you think you know, we will discuss it after tonight.” Lena said. 

“Why? Wouldn’t it be too late then?” Anya asked with a slight dark chuckle, “Besides, what I want to do you, tonight maybe my only chance,” Anya threw a punch suddenly, her fist connecting with Lena’s midsection. 

Lena doubled over, but Anya did not relent. She tripped her to the ground and threw a kick, connecting again with Lena’s midsection.
