Chapter 35: The last dinner
Anya decided to apologize no matter what.
“Well, I apologize if I entered somewhere I should not have.” Anya said Daniel could easily
hear the confusion in her voice.
Daniel looked at her while considering what to say. He wondered if she would protest. He had just come to understand that Anya was headstrong and independent, but most of all independent of him.
She could mix with others, but she kept a clear line between them.
“From now on, you’re staying home,” Daniel declared, his voice firm with authority. “You’re confined to the estate until you’re fully healed, understood?”
Anya’s
eyes widened in shock at Daniel’s decree. Confined? Her? Why?
Was she a live–in concubine from an ancient era? He was actually confining her at home. She had known that Daniel was a bit extreme, but she hadn’t expected him to confine her to the estate like a prisoner.
“How can you just lock me inside?” Anya protested, her voice reeling with frustration. “I can’t just stay cooped up in here forever. I am not some animal to be kept in a cage!”
But Daniel remained unmoved. His cold eyes pierced her Anya–colored ones.
“I am not asking,” Daniel said, his voice cold yet soft. “I have so much money and staff; I can bring everything you want into this room. If you have something you want done. Call anyone, and they will come to you. But as for the matter of you leaving this house till I say so.”

“You cannot keep me here,” Anya protested.
“Someone was hired to abduct you,” he said, and she froze. Seeing her reaction, he left those words hanging in the air. Daniel turned on his heel and left.
“You should prepare. We have to attend a diner at the family mansion,” he said, and Anya looked up to realize that he was still there talking from the doorway.
“Why do I need to be there?” she asked. She did not like being around his family.
“Everyone from the family must be there, and if I remember correctly, you are still married to me,” he said and shut the door.
When he walked down the stairs, he saw Lenny waiting for him at the base of the stairs.
“Sir, there was a mistake this afternoon. I think the madam might have been upset by it,” Lenny said.
“What?” Daniel asked with a frown.
“A stylist came today. They were hired by your secretary, so I assumed they were here for Madam. The madam asked, and it was revealed they were hired for Miss Selene,” Lenny said,
and Daniel’s heart skipped a beat.
Selene? He recalled her saying something about her clothes, and he had asked his secretary to arrange something.
“Was she really upset?” Daniel asked.

“I think so, but I can’t be sure,” Lenny answered
“What did she say?” Daniel asked.
“She asked me to make arrangements to have the stylist sent to Miss Selene. I am sorry for not confirming, sir,” Lenny apologized.
“It’s alight,” Daniel said, then urged him to go back to work.
Daniel could not help but look back up the stairs. Even though he could not see Anya, he was severely uncomfortable.
Anya, on the other hand, decided it was time to find a lawyer. She was not like the rest of the Shaws, who had been given private security. She needed to divorce Daniel and distance herself from him.
When the evening came, she wore a white button–down shirt and trouser and went down to meet Daniel.
When he saw her arrive in her usual attire, he recalled that he had hired a stylist for Selene and felt uncomfortable. He half expected her to be angry and to complain; after all, this was a woman who had gone above and beyond to marry him, yet she did not react when he bought clothes for another woman.
The more quiet she was, the more uncomfortable Daniel felt.
“I should get you a special stylist,” he said, and Anya looked down at her simple attire and recalled the stylist he had hired for Selene. She felt as though he pitied her.
“No thank you,” she rejected.

“You can’t always come out this way, right?” Daniel asked.
“I won’t for long. Our divorce should have been sooner. Your clothes will be useless to me then,” Anya said. She did not want to anger him; she was just telling the truth.
She wished to divorce him and put their entire marriage behind her. She had experienced three years of marriage, but if asked if she got anything after marrying into a wealthy family, she would laugh.
She was barely married. Despite her husband’s money, she still scraped around for money to pay her mother’s bills.
She did not like him pitying her. It made her feel more pathetic than she usually did.
When Daniel heard her answer, he looked away in irritation. Again with the divorce. It was all she talked about.
When they arrived at the family dinner, Anya immediately noticed that Selene was there. Daniel raised a brow in confusion as Selene rushed to his side and took his arm.
The family immediately felt awkward when they saw Anya.
They all looked to Daniel’s cousin, and Anya got all the answers she needed. It seemed that Miley had invited Selene. Anya kept her face blank and found a seat for herself.
She tried to seem as though she did not care. After all, Selene was going to be part of their family soon, right?
Daniel pried Selene’s hand off his arm and told her to sit. Selene noticed the atmosphere and became self–conscious.
Chapter 35. The last dinner.
Anya
did not bother trying to take a seat near Daniel; she just took a seat between the cousins.
Selene and Daniel sat together. The dinner was hard to swallow. No matter what, Anya was still Daniel’s wife, but she sat away from him while his childhood sweetheart took her seat. The family did not like Anya, but they disliked Selene for being such an airhead.
