"You're talking nonsense! Leland would never do such a thing. You're trying to slander him!"
"Oh really? Then, let's meet at the police station."
When Freya threatened to call the cops, Johanna suddenly realized the gravity of the situation. Panic set in, "Leland did this? Reya, there must be some misunderstanding. Please don't call the police. Leland's birthday is just around the corner. If you report him, what will happen to his birthday party?"
Leland's birthday party was not just any event. Johanna had invited all the high-profile ladies and influencers in town.
If anything went wrong, she would lose money and reputation, and her son wouldn't benefit from this situation either.
Thinking of this, Johanna became desperate.
Freya glanced at Johanna and said, "Johanna, what is his birthday to me? If he committed a crime, don't expect me to turn a blind eye."
"Reya! Reya!" Johanna quickly grabbed Freya's arm, pleading, "Let's talk this out. Why make such a big deal out of it? If Leland has wronged you, I apologize on his behalf. Or, oh! I have some jewelry pieces I've been meaning to give you..."
Seeing Johanna resorting to bribery, Freya raised an eyebrow. She decided not to cause a scene before Leland's birthday party, as she didn't want to miss any potential drama that might unfold there.
However, using this to leverage some benefits from Johanna wasn't a bad idea.
Recalling how Johanna had hoarded her mother's jewelry since marrying her father, Freya said, "Johanna, if I remember correctly, aren't those jewelry pieces my mother's heirlooms?"
At that, a flicker of embarrassment crossed Johanna's face. "Those heirlooms were supposed to be kept with me for safekeeping until you were older. Over time, I just forgot about them. But now that we're on the subject. Don't worry. I'll bring all those pieces to you."
