The Bride Who Said No: Escaping the Shadows of Yesterday novel Chapter 364

"If you can say with your hand on your heart that you've got no ties to the Old South Side before we take the plunge, I'll believe you."

"You!" Freya's face turned pale.

How was this any different from a witch hunt?

The high beams were already illuminating the broken bridge ahead, and with a resigned sigh, Freya closed her eyes, leaving her fate to the heavens: "Say what you will, but I swear, I've got nothing to do with the Old South Side!"

Out of the corner of his eye, Preston saw Freya's resignation and, in the nick of time, slammed on the brakes.

They stopped less than an inch from the edge.

The anticipated crash never came.

When she opened her eyes, Freya saw they were at the other end of the bridge.

"Hey, you two!" Not far off, patrol cars were flashing their lights at them.

Soon, two officers got out of a cruiser, one of them shining a flashlight towards them as he approached.

The light hit the car window, nearly blinding Freya.

"Out of the car, both of you!" The officer's tone was brash and commanding.

Freya glanced at Preston, but he showed no intention of opening the door. Instead, he started to reverse the car right in front of the officers.

"Get out of the car, now!" The cop obviously wasn't expecting them to rebel, and as they ignored his orders and backed up, he was shocked.
