“Ex-boyfriend?” Zachary, who was poking his fork in his pasta when he heard that, looked up at Kendrick.
Rory did the same, her thick long lashes fluttering as she blinked her eyes.
Being stared at by his nephew and niece, Kendrick started explaining awkwardly, “Umm... Ms. Ery's ex-boyfriend was the man she dated before she met your dad...”
Right after he finished speaking, he felt daggers shooting at him. Just like what he thought, when he looked up, he saw his brother, who had hurt his elbow for some unknown reason, staring at him.
After hearing their uncle's explanation, Zachary and Rory looked toward their dad simultaneously.
“She's working in the same department as her ex-boyfriend? How does that even make sense!” Lily exclaimed.
For the past few days, her son had been finding reasons for her to get out of the house, such as asking her to go hiking or play poker with her friends.
Lily was not stupid and could guess why he was doing that.
Allie's son had started dating, and his girlfriend had happened to witness the drama in the prestigious family the first time she visited the house.
As such, Lily was certain that those people were trying to get her out of the way in order to have peace in the house and to make sure that such an embarrassing incident would not happen again.
Does this mean that I have to go out whenever Avery visits next time?
Lily was rather upset over that and had been trying to tamp down her irritation. After knowing that Allie's future daughter-in-law had an ex-boyfriend, there was no way she would pass up on the opportunity to vent her frustrations.
Allie was sitting right across Lily.
When she looked up and met Lily's gaze, she really wanted to tell her that Cayden had already broken up with Avery!
However, considering the fact that Jeffrey was still unaware of their current status, Allie could only continue to keep quiet graciously.
Just then, Jeffrey, who had not spoken for a while, asked, “Kendrick, tell me what's going on.”
“Umm...” Kendrick glanced at Cayden, afraid that he might say something inappropriate. However, he did not dare to hide the truth from his grandfather. Anyway, what's wrong with having an ex-boyfriend? It's not even a crime!
“Avery had a boyfriend previously when she was studying overseas. However, their relationship only lasted for slightly over one year. Both of them returned to the country together and entered the same company, which is our family's company.” Kendrick started to panic as he spoke. Taking a pause, he continued, “In the end, that jerk cheated on her. Not only that...”
“What happened after that?” Jeffrey asked, frowning.
The others who were at the table were also staring at Kendrick intently, wanting to know what happened.
Just then, Cayden got up and said, “I'm done eating. Enjoy your meal.”
“Not only that, the third party was Avery's step-sister...” Kendrick continued.
Lily finally understood what was going on and said, “That means Cayden and Ery have only been dating for less than a month...”
As Cayden had already headed upstairs, the woman no longer felt a need to hold back her words and continued, “Old Mr. Moore, it's important for you to pick a good granddaughter-in-law and not make the same mistake you did in choosing your daughter-in-law back then. It's only because we had handled the media well and Cayden had turned out to be so outstanding that our Moore family did not suffer any negative repercussions. I'm sure our company's stocks would plummet if one day, everyone finds out that Bruce's publicly-known wife used to work as a hostess in a nightclub and had only managed to achieve success by sleeping with men—”
“Shut up! Stop spouting nonsense in front of the kids!” Allie slammed her fist on the table and bellowed furiously.
Instead of getting angry over being interrupted, Lily laughed and said, “Are you losing your cool because I have hit the nail on the head? I'm just trying to teach the children the facts so that they would know who's the most shameless and despicable person in the family!”
“I'm full.” Zachary got up and left.
“I'm done eating too.” Rory followed suit.
However, instead of going upstairs, the siblings headed to the garden, not wanting to stay in the house for even a second longer.
Meanwhile, at the clubhouse, someone was using the attached restroom in the private room.
As Avery needed to use the restroom urgently, she had no choice but to look for another one outside.
Yvonne followed Avery out of the room, all the way until they reached a larger restroom which was a distance away from the private room. After Avery entered one of the cubicles and was about to shut the door, Yvonne extended her hand and stopped the woman from doing so.
“I have something to ask you. Why are you avoiding me?”
Avery looked up and stared at Yvonne before replying, “I wasn't avoiding you.”
“Although I have nothing to say to a scheming woman like you, there's something I would like to warn you about,” Yvonne said in a shrill voice before continuing, “I've met my fair share of sluts like you. Since you have already broken up with him, you should know your place and take the initiative to resign. If you are smart enough and do the right thing, I'll consider giving you two branded bags that you would never be able to afford on your own as compensation.”
“Are you done? Please leave if you've finished talking,” Avery said calmly before trying to close the cubicle door.
However, Yvonne held the door open forcefully and yelled, “Do you understand what I am saying? I am ordering you to resign and get lost!”
The other women using the restroom heard the commotion and cast strange looks at Yvonne. However, they did not interfere and continued washing their hands.
Just then, the cleaner in charge of cleaning the restroom walked in.
Avery said, “Ms. Gallagher, I'm sure a high-class person like you wouldn't want to watch me while I do my business here, right?”
“What?” Yvonne shrieked in disbelief before saying, “Seriously, how low can you get? I really wonder what he saw in you.” As they were out in public, Yvonne did not dare to say Cayden's name out loud as she was afraid that someone might hear it and start spreading negative news.
Avery let out a mirthless laugh before replying, “Maybe he has met too many high-class women like you, that's why he found someone as lowly as me refreshing.”
After saying that, the woman proceeded to unbutton her skirt, as if there was no one else around. Just when she was about to take it off, Yvonne took a step backward before slamming the door shut.
Pointing her finger at the door, Yvonne suddenly shook her head and said in a lethargic voice, “I was expecting a tougher competitor. It seems like my worries were unfounded. I'm sure he would have gotten rid of you sooner or later even without me doing anything. You really should have some self-awareness and understand that, coming from an impoverished background, you would never be able to fit into the world of the rich.”
Yvonne paused and yawned before leaning against the wall. “Did you really think you would be able to blend in with the wealthy? With what? With your cheap bag? Lowly family? Or embarrassing parents? Tsk, tsk. Seriously, Avery, what do you have that is even good?” she continued.
The restroom cleaner was mopping the floor when she heard Yvonne's words. With a crease between her brows, she jabbed the mop at the woman's feet while saying, “Excuse me.”
“Ahh! This is so gross! Ugh, being around poor people really gives me bad luck!” Yvonne cried out. She ran out of the restroom at once, feeling disgusted that the mop had come into contact with her shoe.
Meanwhile, Zayne was texting Fernando while looking around for Avery.
He could not ask anyone if they had seen the woman because he did not want to be suspected if something happened to her the next day while Fernando was having fun with her.
After searching around for more than half an hour, he was still unable to find her.
Could she have lost her way or fallen asleep somewhere?
Zayne stopped for a while to reply to Fernando's text: Relax. I'm looking for her right now.
Meanwhile, a black Bentley with an eye-catching car plate number was parked outside the entrance of the clubhouse.
The next moment, Xavier got out of the car and was about to head into the clubhouse with the two little ones when Zachary asked Cayden, “Daddy, do you want to go in with us since you're already here?”
The boy knew that his father was hiding his true feelings. Even though the man appeared to be indifferent, Zachary knew that he cared about Avery more than anyone else. As such, he had intentionally asked that question to give Cayden an excuse to go in together with them.
