Chapter 492 No Mercy
When Nicole saw Allie fail to open Cayden's door, a feeling of disappointment swelled within her.
She hid the mockery in her eyes and tried to sound understanding by saying, “Mdm. Allie, it seems that Cayden's quite the wary person. He really doesn't like strangers entering his space, huh? Well, since I haven't established a relationship with him yet, let's just stay out of his room. Otherwise, I'm sure he'll be mad if he finds out about this. It's not a big deal if he gets mad at me, but should this matter end up creating a rift between you and your son, I'd feel very guilty.”
Smiling, Allie replied, “You're right, Nickie. I'm sure that once you become Cayden's fiancée, he'll show you around his room himself. I'll be looking forward to that day to come.”
The more I interact with Nicole, the more I realize she's going to be a great daughter-in-law. After all, she's already thinking for my sake even when she's not married to Cayden yet. Besides, it's not a bad thing to have a daughter-in-law that's easy to handle and is always on my side.
While Allie was still deep in her thoughts, Nicole asked softly, “Mdm. Allie, is Cayden very busy these days?”
She had gone to Trident Group many times to look for Cayden, but not once had she managed to meet him. Apart from that, Cayden even instructed his subordinates to keep his whereabouts secret. Even when Nicole gave it her all to try and pry some information out of the receptionist's mouth, it was all for naught. Left without a choice, she could only come to the Moore residence to find him.
In response, Allie confirmed, “Yes. My son has been busy with some urban reform projects recently. In fact, he's so busy that he hardly has any time to rest. It pains me as a mother to see him lose so much weight.”
She then added, “Nickie, it's actually not that difficult to capture a man's heart as long as you use the right skills. My son is a career-minded man. Because of this, he is relatively slow when it comes to dealing with feelings, and he needs a woman who can take the initiative. You're a good catch, and I believe that sooner or later, you'll be able to capture my son's heart as long as you keep being nice to him.”
After a moment, she divulged, “You know, back when I was with Bruce, there were always heaps of women surrounding him, but their relationship with him usually only lasted a month. I was the only woman who was able to stay by his side the longest. And the reason for that is that I know what he needs.”
Hearing that, Nicole thought about Allie's identity. I can't deny that she's one crafty woman to be able to go from a down-and-out dancer who relied on her children to rise to the top, to becoming the lady of the Moore family. In fact, she was able to earn herself a position higher than Lily, the legitimate wife.
With that thought in mind, she said meekly, “I'll do my best, Mdm. Allie. By the way, do you know when Cayden will be back?”
With that thought in mind, she said meekly, “I'll do my best, Mdm. Allie. By the way, do you know when Cayden will be back?”
“The Moore family has a family dinner on the fifteenth of every month. Every member of the family will have to come back no matter how busy they are. Since today happens to be the fifteenth, my son will surely come home,” came Allie's reply.
“I see. Well, today is also my grandmother's birthday, so I will have to stop by her house later. Mdm. Allie, if Cayden's late, I will come again next time.”
As Nicole spoke, she and Allie descended the stairs together before sitting down on the couch in the living room and continuing their conversation.
Their topic of conversation only circled around luxury goods, beauty products, and so on, for Nicole was aware that if they talked about anything deeper, Allie would find it too difficult to continue.
Nicole had heard from her parents that Bruce was a bigshot playboy back in the day, and she wondered how a woman of low status like Allie was able to wrap such a man around her finger.
Thankfully, Cayden only inherited his mother's good looks and nothing more. His intelligence and talents are all inherited from his father.
Soon, a striking luxury car pulled up outside the mansion. Leading the twins who had just finished school, Cayden walked into the living room.
When he saw Nicole, a grim look flitted across his eyes before it was replaced by his usual cold look. He asked, “Ms. Nicole, when did you arrive?”
“Not too long ago. I'm here to pay Mrs. Moore a visit. Did you go to pick up Zach and Rory?” Nicole stared at Cayden, her eyes shining with adoration.
It seems that every time I see him, he becomes a bit more handsome than before. His deep and ebony eyes, especially, look as dazzling as diamonds. Even without the light, they still shine with fascinating beauty.
Holding on to their father's hand, the twins frowned when they noticed Nicole and refused to even greet the woman.
After all, in their mind, Nicole was nothing but a sly vixen trying to worm her way into their father's heart. They saw no reason to be friendly toward the woman who was trying to snatch their mother's position.
Although Nicole was a little embarrassed when she realized the angelic-looking twins were giving her the cold shoulder, she was not discouraged from trying to get into their good books.
She took out two sets of branded children's clothing from her large handbag and held them out to the twins. “Zach, Rory, I bought you each a new set of clothes. Why don't you guys try them on and see if they fit?”
After saying that, she tore open the packaging and took out a cool biker suit for Zachary and a beautiful princess dress for Rory.
Zachary didn't accept the clothes and with a cold gaze that looked exactly the same as Cayden's, he stared at Nicole and said in a polite and distant tone, “Thank you for the gift, Ms. Lambert, but my sister and I have so many clothes that we can't finish wearing them.”
As for Rory, she was not as civil as her brother. “Ms. Lambert, my mommy already bought me a dress of a similar style last month, and I think I prefer the one my mommy bought for me.”
The gentle smile on Nicole's face stiffened ever so lightly when she heard that. “That's okay. What kind of style do you like, Rory? You can tell me in advance so that I can buy them for you.”
She had thought that the two innocent-looking kids would be easy to handle, but alas, she didn't expect that they would act so hostile toward her.
I guess it's true when they say being a stepmother is an arduous task. If I really get to marry Cayden one day, I must make sure to get rid of these two annoying brats.
Allie pulled her granddaughter toward her and chided her coldly, “How can you talk to Ms. Lambert like that? Didn't I teach you to always be polite to her? You need to thank her for buying you beautiful clothes, got it? Otherwise, people will criticize the children of the Moore family for being impolite and uneducated.”
To that, Rory scoffed and turned her head away, not wanting to look at her grandmother's furious expression, and certainly not at Nicole's ingratiating behavior.
Feeling even more embarrassed, Nicole pretended to look at her watch before saying, “Mdm. Allie, it's getting late. I'll have to take my leave now or my parents would be worried. I'll pay you a visit again when I have the time.”
Hearing that she was leaving, Allie shot a look at Cayden, who was heading toward the stairs, and uttered, “All right. If it weren't for your grandmother's birthday, I would have loved to let you stay for dinner. Cayden, give Nicole a lift, won't you? It's Old Mrs. Lambert's birthday today, and you can buy some gifts for her on the way.”
