Chapter 493 Heart Sank
The streets were lively as usual in the evening as luxurious cars sped along the wide roads.
Cayden personally drove Nicole home.
The handsome man with a good-looking profile and perfect jawline sat inside the car in silence while waiting for the traffic light at the junction to turn green.
Staring at the traffic jam outside the window, Nicole secretly curled her lips into a gleeful smile.
Although the Moore residence was merely around an hour's drive away from the Lambert residence, she was still very excited to spend even one minute longer with him.
While patiently waiting for the traffic light to turn green, Cayden rested his palm on the steering wheel and stared ahead. “Ms. Lambert, may I know what Old Mrs. Lambert's hobby is? I didn't have much time to prepare her birthday present, so I'm gifting her an original artwork by Baldwin Quintus from my own collection. I wonder if Old Mrs. Lambert will like it.”
Nicole elegantly and tenderly replied, “Grandma shares the same interest as Grandpa. They both enjoy collecting famous paintings, so I'm sure she'll like your gift. Thank you for attending my grandma's birthday banquet and putting in the money and effort to prepare a present for her.”
In fact, she yearned for Cayden to attend her grandmother's birthday banquet. She was confident that if Cayden were to show up alongside her, they would be the most highlighted couple during the event.
He bored his piercing gaze into her delicate countenance and abruptly smirked. “Ms. Lambert, do you like me a lot?”
Nicole's heart skipped a beat. Then, she answered in a soft voice, “Cayden, you actually know everything, don't you? I thought I was being obvious enough... I've done so many things for you. Are you really oblivious to my feelings? I used to send you nutritious meals on a daily basis in the past, and I'm frequenting the Moore residence nowadays. I wish to build a good rapport with every member of the Moore family. Everything I do, I do it for you.”
Fervent passion burned in Nicole's eyes as she held his gaze.
Her innocent eyes shone with exceptional determination as she looked shyly and helplessly at the magnificent man before her.
Cayden turned his face sideways and stared into her eyes with his sharp gaze. “Do you like me that much? I suppose I should count myself the luckiest guy in the world.”
Streetlamps lit up as night arrived. The shimmering light flashing across Cayden's face layered his chiseled features with a mysterious veil of shadow.
His overly perfect countenance had always prompted Nicole to swoon over him.
In fact, working in the complicated entertainment industry, she had come across different kinds of men. Some were cool, while others were gentle or humorous. However, in her opinion, Cayden was the embodiment of every man's excellent traits.
He was like an eternally unsolvable puzzle, invoking the curiosity in others to focus on him.
A hint of subtle detestation flitted across Cayden's eyes as he sensed Nicole gaping at him in silence.
Nonetheless, he did a splendid job covering up his real emotions. He uttered in a magnetic and seductive voice, “Since you regard me with such significance, should we try dating?”
What?
Nicole lost control of herself in front of Cayden for the first time. Her mouth hung wide open, so much so that a whole chicken egg could fit inside. “Did you just suggest for us to start dating? A-Are my ears playing tricks on me?”
“Ms. Lambert, you heard me right. However, I have plenty of quirks that ordinary girls couldn't accept. Therefore, I'll have to trouble you to put up with me in the future.” He grinned.
“Cayden, don't say that. You're the most remarkable man I've ever seen. I genuinely wish to be with you and hope we stay together for the rest of our lives.” Nicole didn't dare to breathe too loudly and even pinched her thigh forcefully.
She finally convinced herself he had indeed just asked her out after sensing the pain in her leg.
The woman was still in a daze even upon their arrival at the Lambert residence. She finally regained her senses when she felt the crowd's envious gaze on her after Cayden led her into the banquet hall.
That night, the Lambert residence was exceptionally vibrant as opposed to its usual quietness.
Although Fiona's birthday banquet wasn't as impressive as George's, which was held a few months ago, the arrangements were sufficiently grand.
After all, most of the people who attended the banquet were there because of George and William's statuses.
Linda excitedly linked arms with Cayden while they ambled into the banquet hall. She even had a feeling that everything around them had turned into a mere stale background to accentuate her and Cayden's presence.
As the dazzling lights in the hall shone on them, Nicole felt as though the air inside the venue was laced with a hint of sweet fragrance.
George and Fiona were astonished to see their granddaughter walking arm in arm with Cayden. Nevertheless, they didn't react to that observation excessively.
Claire's heart sank with a thud when she took in that scene. What's going on? I've advised Nickie to avoid interacting with Cayden. Why is she turning a deaf ear to my words?
Naturally, George was informed of the disengagement incident during the Moore family's engagement banquet. That was a form of absolute humiliation to a prestigious clan like the Moore family. Not to mention, Jeffrey regarded the family's reputation with utmost importance. Hence, he was all the more unable to accept that turn of events.
Regardless of what happened between Cayden and his ex-girlfriend, the girl named Avery will never get the chance to become the Moore family's daughter-in-law again, no matter how brilliant she may be.
George was very satisfied with Cayden and had always hoped to render the latter part of his family.
Now that he saw his granddaughter attending the banquet with Cayden, not to mention taking in their intimate interaction, George thought Nicole, who he always felt was incompetent, had finally accomplished something he found satisfactory.
“Good evening, Old Mr. Lambert. Old Mrs. Lambert, today is your birthday banquet, so I wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous life. This is a gift from me. Please kindly accept it.” Cayden handed the painting to Fiona.
“Thank you for your thoughtful gesture, Cayden. How did you know I'm fond of Mr. Quintus' painting?” Fiona was an artwork enthusiast and was particularly fond of Baldwin's prawn drawings.
Fiona, who was equipped with relatively exceptional appraisal skills, could tell that the painting was Baldwin's original work as soon as she unboxed the present.
The lifelike prawns in the drawing had translucent, glistening bodies. Baldwin was the only person who could've painted such a realistic piece of art.
Fiona carefully held the painting while smiling from ear to ear. “How did you acquire this original work? This is such a wonderful gift!”
Cayden replied, “I'm glad that you like the present. This is just a small gift from me. I previously saw this painting in an auction and thought it looked nice, so I bought it. I didn't know what present to prepare for you since I'm attending your birthday banquet today. After some ponderation, I decided to gift you a drawing. Unexpectedly, the gift I prepared is to your preference. Perhaps this is fate.”
“You're so eloquent. Cayden, I think you and Nickie are a match made in heaven. Since you're not married, why don't I make the call for you to be my grandson-in-law?” Fiona grasped Cayden's hands and passionately sounded him out.
